China

One of the sources (China: A Prison of Nations) for the line "Goetsu nationalism" should be deprecated and removed because it is not it violates WP:FRIND by saying that "Hokkien" was a nation conquered by China (reliable sources don't agree with that). 69.157.143.65 (talk) 11:06, 24 May 2022 (UTC)

“Hokkien” refers to the Kingdom of Minyue, which was annexed by the Han dynasty in 111 BCE. Hokkien people, also known as the Hoklo or Min people are the descendants of the Kingdom of Minyue’s inhabitants. If reliable sources disagree with that, they should be mentioned. Hoklo nationalism refers to the attemts to create a nation state for the Hokkien, Hoklo or Min people. Also, even if Flags of the World says that it does not want to be held accountable for any errors, it is an online encyclopedia of flags. Therefore, it should be retained as extra source for already verified claims. Crab2814 (talk) 18:16, 26 May 2022 (UTC)

A reminder that With the ratification of the Bangsamoro Organic Law following a plebiscite on January 21, 2019, the abolition process of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) began, paving way for the formal creation of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region. On August 12, 2022, Abdulkarim Misuari, Nurrheda Misuari along with 4 others have been appointed as Members of Parliament for the Bangsamoro Transition Authority under President Bongbong Marcos. The appointment lasts until the regular elections for the Bangsamoro Parliament will be held on 2025.

Is the Balawaristan National Student Organization a seperatist organization? Luxenburg lover (talk) 17:00, 18 October 2022 (UTC)

I do not find anything to indicate that they are. The strongest demand I have been able to find from the Balawaristan National Student Organization, is that they want Balawaristan to gain status as a province of Pakistan, which seems like a very modest demand. --T*U (talk) 15:26, 19 October 2022 (UTC)

Indonesia

There is a movement in Indonesian Borneo To create a state called Kalimantan Borneo or Malaysia here are some links http://www.tribunnews.com/nasional/2011/08/04/perhatian-buruk-warga-perbatasan-ancam-kibarkan-bendera-malaysia, http://www.itoday.co.id/politik/duh-wni-di-perbatasan-ancam-gabung-ke-malaysia?q=/politik/7351-duh-wni-di-perbatasan-ancam-gabung-ke-malaysia, Luxenburg lover (talk) 10:36, 26 October 2022 (UTC)

@Luxenburg lover: Both your links seem to be newspapers, and as far as I can see, they could well qualify as reliable sources. However, since they are not in English, it would be best to use direct quotations equipped with translations if they are used in any references.
But the problem is that I cannot find anything mentioned about Kalimantan or about the creation of a state. The first link is (Google translate) about villagers threatening to fly the Malaysian flag as a demonstration against the Indonesian government's neglection of their area. That does not qualify as a separatist movement. The other link does not go to any specific article, but by using Google translate on the web address "wni di perbatasan ancam gabung ke malaysia" (translating to "Indonesian citizens at the border threaten to join Malaysia") it tells me that it is about the same incident, which happened in 2011, eleven and a half years ago.
There is nothing here about a movement to create a state called Kalimantan (Kalimantan is the name of the Indonesian part of Borneo). If such a movement exists, you will have to find sources decribing the movement, and you will need to make sure that it is still active. So far you have done neither. --T*U (talk) 13:08, 26 October 2022 (UTC)

Korea

How credible is the Jeju separatist movement? There does not appear to be any separatist movement in Jeju regarding independence from Korea.

I read all the references attached to the article, but none of them pointed out that there was a separatist movement in Jeju:

  • "crwflags". is just a website about flag of Jeju, no related to the Jeju Separation Movement.
  • "제주평화박물관". is just the Jeju Peace Museum website, no related to the Jeju Separation Movement.
  • "Stateless-nations". like the first reference, it's a website about flags, which doesn't prove that there was a separatist movement in Jeju.
  • "Will Jeju Island soon want independence?". is purely the author's expression and conjecture, and it does not mean that there is really a separatist movement in Jeju.
  • "Jeju website in english". is just the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province government website, no related to the Jeju Separation Movement.
  • Considering that the movement was against Japanese rule, "제주지역 독립운동 사적지 활용방안". was actually several anti-Japanese movement in Jeju, refer to part of the Korean independence movement.

Kutch State (India)

or Cutch State, covering the Kutch district of Gujarat, the Great Rann of Kutch, and the Little Rann of Kutch, is an aspirant, both as an independent state and as part of a combined Saurashtra, also known as Kathiawar. Both Saurashtra State and Kutch State existed as separate states from 1947 to 1956.[73][74] They were Part-B and Part-C states of India respectively. They were merged with Bombay state following the States Re-organisation Act,[75] and became part of Gujarat after the bifurcation of Bombay state on 1 May 1960 following the Mahagujarat Movement. Some people demand a return of statehood to Saurashtra and Kutch, citing slow development of the regions.[76] Apart from these two separate statehood demands, there is a demand for a separate Bhilistan state.[73][72][77] At the time of the integration of the princely state of Kutch with India in 1947, the accession was done on the condition that Kutch would retain the status of a separate state. It enjoyed this status until 1960, when a separate state of Gujarat was carved out of Maharashtra and Kutch was merged with it. The main reason behind a separate state is cultural and geographical distance from Gandhinagar. In 1960, Kutch was promised an autonomous development board under Article 371(2) of the Constitution, which never came into existence due to lack of political will. Additionally, water from the Narmada does not reach the farms of this region.[78]

Kodagu (India)

Kodagu is a district of Karnataka that is predominantly inhabited by Kodava people. The Codava National Council (CNC) wishes for it to be an "autonomous region".[85]

Garoland (India)

Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) is seated at Tura and is one of the three Autonomous District Councils within Meghalaya state, and one of fourteen autonomous regions of India. The region of Garoland covers the districts of East Garo Hills, West Garo Hills, South Garo Hills, North Garo Hills, and Southwest Garo Hills.

The Garo National Council is a political party in Meghalaya in northeastern India. Founded by Clifford R. Marak, the party fights for the creation of a Garo-majority state, to be carved from the districts of West Garo Hills, East Garo Hills, and South Garo Hills. The Garoland demand of GNC is different from that of the separatist guerrilla Achik National Volunteer Council, who alos demands that parts of Assam ought to be part of Garoland.

GNC won one seat in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council elections in 2002.

In the 2003 Meghalaya state assembly elections, GNC had put up seven candidates, who together received 8,483 votes. Clifford Marak, the only GNC MLA in the state legislature, died on 1 March 2015 of liver and kidney disease.

Janmabhoomi Movement (India)

Andhra Pradesh, Andhra (Jai Andhra movement), Janmabhoomi Movement

Nations Without States has an entry from before Jharkhand's statehood. One flag is described as that of the largest national movement, a horizontal tricolor of green, white, green. On the white stripe is centered a red disk. From the line drawing it appears that the disk's diameter is 2/3 of the stripe's height. The flag's ratio is 2:3 (as are all the ones shown in "Nations Without States", unless otherwise specified). The second flag cited in Nations Without States is called the flag of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, the largest nationalist group. It is a green flag with a white rooster in the center. The People's Liberation Front of India (PLFI) is a militant Maoist outfits formed in 2007 in Jharkhand. Earlier It was known as Jharkhand Liberation Tigers (JLT) founded by Dinesh Gope a resident of Khunti district, Jharkhand in 2003. Later it renamed as PLFI.

The Karbi Longri North Cachar Hills Liberation Front (India)

The Karbi Longri North Cachar Hills Liberation Front (KLNLF), a breakaway faction of the United People’s Democratic Solidarity (UPDS), was formed on May 16, 2004. The split was triggered by a cease-fire agreement, signed on May 23, 2002, between the UPDS and Union Government. The outfit also has an armed wing called the Karbi Longri North Cachar Hills Resistance Force.

The outfit claims to fight for the cause of Karbi tribes and its declared objective is Hemprek Kangthim, meaning self-rule/self-determination of the Karbi people.

Ladakh Union Territory Front (India)

Nations Without States has an entry on Ladakh, Ladakh Union Territory Front basic objective was to fight for the Union Territory status for Ladakh. A consortium of political parties formed in 2002 decided that a regional party shall be formed under a single flag and carry the struggle for the Union territory status for Ladakh.

Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council

Bnei Menashe (India)

Bnei Menashe In March 2004, Biaksiama appeared on television, discussing the issues with Lalchhanhima Sailo, founder of Chhinlung Israel People's Convention (CIPC), a secessionist Mizo organization. Sailo said that CIPC's goal was not emigration to Israel, but to have the United Nations declare the areas inhabited by Mizo tribes to be an independent nation for Mizo Israelites.

According to a piece in today's Yedioth Akhronot daily, the flag of the proposed Jewish state in Mizoram is white with two blue stripes charged with a lion, olive branches and the word "Jerusalem". According to this piece, DNA tests proved that the people of "Kuki" (sp?) and "Lusay" (sp?) tribes are from Jewish origin and related to the Jewish population of Uzbekistan. The piece also reported that they addressed the UN in 1998 and also asked for recognition from Israel.

Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council(India)

Rabha National Security Force In 2000, the Assamese legislature passed a bill creating the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council, but limited only to the district of Goalpara. It doesn't satisfy most of Rabhas and the relatively moderate factions want more territory included in the Rabha Hasong Autonomous District, while the radical ones demand outright independence. One of the radical Rabha organization is Rabha National Security Force (RNSF) allied with United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA). http://www.satp.org/satporgtp/countries/india/states/assam/terrorist_outfits/rnsf.htm

https://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/in-rab.html

Sanatal (India)

The Birsa Commando Force was founded in response to ethnic clashes between Santhals and Bodos (another minority group) in the state of Assam. Bodos and Santhals both demand independent states in Assam, and have often clashed over territory and economic issues. Santhals make up a large majority of tea-workers in Assam, which has created a backlash among Bodos who resent the Santhal's higher economic standing.

More on Santals can be read at http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Santal and http://wesanthals.tripod.com/

https://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/in-santl.html

The Tuluvas of Southern India are a separate culture from the Kannadiggas within India. From India's independence and the following reorganization of states, the Tuluvas had been demanding language status for Tulu and a separate state for themselves. Though a bit subdued in between, this demand has grown stronger in recent years. Several organizations like the Tulu Rajya Horata Samiti (Tulu State Action Committee) have taken up the cause of the Tuluvas and frequent meetings and demonstrations are held across towns in Tulunadu (like Mangalore, Udupi etc) to voice their demands.

Saudi Arabia

@Mawlana sisi: Seeing that you are new to the Wikipedia game, I will try to explain why your edits to the list are not acceptable. One of the most important policies in Wikipedia is verifiability, see WP:V. In a nutshell, verifiability means that other editors should be able to verify that the content comes from a reliable source, see WP:RS. What you or I know or think we know, has no room in the encyclopedia unless supported by reliable sources.

Regarding the Najran entry, you have changed the 'Ethnic group' entry from 'shia Arabs' to 'Zaydi Shia Arabs'. I am sure that you may have reasons for doing this, and it is quite possible that you are right. But the problem is that there is no mention of this in the linked article Shia Islam in Saudi Arabia or in the article about Zaydism, nor is Zaydism mentioned in the two sources given for the organisation 'Ahrar al-Najran'. It is therefore necessary to give a reliable source for this statement. I will not revert it this time, but will instead insert a "citation needed" tag, hoping that someone can find sources. If that does not happen, the mention of Zaydism will have to be removed.

Regarding the Qatif entry, the problem goes deeper. Yes, one of the two sources mention separatism, so there may be a possibility that this conflict belongs in the list. But none of the two sources mention 'Baharna' or 'independence', nor does the article about the Qatif conflict. Before this entry can be included, it will have to be supported by reliable sources supporting both the claims about 'Baharna' being the relevant ethnic group and the goal of 'independence'. At that point, the Qatif conflict article can be included as a 'main article' link (but it will need to be moved down to the specific section).

I am sure you can contribute to the Saudi Arabia section of this article, but you will need to follow the Wikipedia way, helping to find reliable sources. Regards! T*U (talk) 14:36, 13 December 2022 (UTC)

Hi, @TU-nor: I saw the discussion here about the Saudi Arabia section. I think you should know that it was removed before by me after a long and thorough discussion with @Mako001: and @FDW777: which is archived here. I honestly want to remove it for several reasons, but before that I thought it would be better to discuss that here and here is my argument for the removal:

First The Ahrar al-Najran article was deleted from Wikipedia. You can see the delete log here I don't see why we need to rewrite about a subject that was deleted before. the reason the article was deleted takes us to the second reason which is mentioned in the discussion of the deletion I mentioned earlier. The article that was deleted about The Ahrar al-Najran as well as the Saudi Arabia section in this article relies on Iranian sources and other Iranian media outlets. the only source used in this article which is not related to Iran is of Jamestown Foundation here. The Jamestown Foundation article itself states that all accounts about Ahrar al-Najran existence came from "reports by Iranian media, and media produced by Iran’s allies in Syria" and "There has been no independent corroboration of any of these events, however. Moreover, since summer, Iranian claims of domestic Saudi opposition forces in Najran have tailed off. This suggests either that such forces, if they existed, have become less active, or that Iran’s government decided that promoting such propaganda were no longer in its interests". OKMG-1200 (talk) 19:28, 21 March 2023 (UTC)

@OKMG-1200: At the time I wrote the above, I was not aware that it had been inserted and removed earlier. If I had, I would have removed it in the same edit where I removed the entry about Qatif, so you have my full support for removal on the grounds that you have outlined. My role in this and similar articles has been to remove unsourced additions, additions about non-active organisations etc. It has been an uphill battle, as there seems to be an unlimited number of "movements" out there and quite a number of editors wanting to include their favorites (and a very small number of editors working actively to protect the encyclopedic integrity of these articles). I have been doing my clean-up work on and off for some months. But after a period of two weeks with very limited internet access, I took a look at the articles yesterday and saw that they are again overflowing with unsourced and badly sourced rubbish. So I decided that enough is enough, that I have wasted enough of my time on this now and will concentrate on other stuff. Knowing myself, I know that I may periodically return and throw some spanners into the flow of rubbish (if you will excuse me for mixing metaphores), but I will no longer be an active member of the renovation team. I will, however, applaude those who still are. Good luck! --T*U (talk) 08:06, 22 March 2023 (UTC)
@TU-nor: Thanks a lot. I removed the content. I really appreciate your hard work and I wish you continue working on this page. As you said a very small number of editors working actively to protect the encyclopedic integrity of these articles and we don't want this number to get smaller. I will be more than happy to help. wish you good luck and stay strong. OKMG-1200 (talk) 13:42, 22 March 2023 (UTC)

For rather obvious reasons, Wikipedia – and all similar user-created sites – can not be used as a source for Wikipedia, see WP:NOTSOURCE. I think it would be good if you could use some time to read carefully WP:RS about reliable sources. It is one of the most central concepts of Wikipedia. --T*U (talk) 19:20, 28 March 2023 (UTC)

Macau

I think the Macau part in the China section should be removed. There are no sources to support it. There is no specific movement or organization that calls for Macau independence. even the article about Macau independence in Wikipedia doesn't state any active organizations. OKMG-1200 (talk) 14:57, 12 April 2023 (UTC)

@OKMG-1200: Agreed! In the Macau independence article here is even a sourced statement about the relative lack of independence sentiment in Macau. I will make a bold edit and remove it! --T*U (talk) 08:21, 24 April 2023 (UTC)

Kazakhstan

Iraqi Turkmen

Is there any evidence of an actual separatist movement here? The Iraqi Turkmen Front appears to be a regionalist organization for Iraqi Turkmen interests. As far as I can tell, the claims of Turkmeneli are not for a separate state but for recognition as a Turkmen cultural region within Iraq. Xophe84 (talk) 21:06, 12 May 2023 (UTC)

Proposal

Instead of the usual format that is like this:

Territory of the short-lived Talysh-Mughan Autonomous Republic

why don’t we change it up to something like this:

Territory of the short-lived Talysh-Mughan Autonomous Republic

This movement advocates the re establishment of the former short lived unrecognized Talysh-Mughan Autonomous Republic which has a Talysh minority. the proposed republic will consist of seven administrative districts of Azerbaijan around the regional capital city Lankaran: Lankaran city, Lankaran, Lerik, Astara, Masally, Yardymli, Jalilabad, Bilasuvar. Historically, the area had been a khanate called the Talysh Khanate (note this is just how I imagine it could look like) about Comores 123 (talk) 11:33, 22 May 2023 (UTC)

Malaysia

Is it Just Me, Or the Malaysia Article Always gets Frequently added with Unsourced Rubbish and Spam Every time I decided to Look back at the wiki article? Burgercheckingwolf (talk) 14:29, 28 May 2023 (UTC)

Just Noticed How the Edits are Frequently Changed, and how the Malaysia Article Often get Spammed with so called "Movements" or "Unifications" with Either Philippines or Indonesia, made by those Indonesian Wiki Trolls AcehIndependence04 (talk) 14:32, 28 May 2023 (UTC)
It has been Almost 2 weeks Since I Was engaged in an "Edit War" Against those Indonesian Wiki Trolls, especially how they would frequently Remove Riau from the Indonesia article, and Would just Target on Malaysia by Adding more Unsourced stuff, or Spam Burgercheckingwolf (talk) 14:33, 28 May 2023 (UTC)

Major vs Minor movements

What does count as a major or minor movement in the China section? Does it count how many political parties advocate for independence if it were so why is Inner Mongolia a minor movement if there are lots of political parties advocating for it Comores 123 (talk) 11:23, 2 June 2023 (UTC)

Yes I think it should be readded when there are like 6 parties supporting it and the Chinese government saying there was active separatism in the area I think it was removed because you didn't give enough sources Rad da writer (talk) 13:01, 2 June 2023 (UTC)
nevermind it was removed because ethnic mongols are actually a minority in inner Mongolia. Rad da writer (talk) 17:37, 2 June 2023 (UTC)
@Comores 123 and Rad da writer: Actually, it is not up to any of you (or me) to make rules about what is to be called major or minor. If reliable sources describe movements as major or minor, we can make such distinctions. If not, we can not. --T*U (talk) 13:55, 3 June 2023 (UTC)

Recent additions to Pakistan

@Comores 123: What is it that you do not understand? Please discuss in talk page or at least give an edit summary to explain why you are continuing to add non-movements to the article.

Re Gilgit-Baltistan: No movement mentioned, removed

Re Southern Punjab: The listed 'Saraiki Movement' has no article in Wikipedia and is not mentioned in any of the linked articles or any of the sources. If it exists, it has to be separately sourced.

Hazarajat looks legitimate at first sight. I will just remove the {{main}} link to another section in this article. That does not make any sense. T*U (talk) 15:48, 31 July 2023 (UTC)

the wikipedia article for balawaristan nationalist front also says it calls for autonomy and while the citations given do suggest the leader of the party supports autonomy I am not sure if that can be used to suggest that the whole party supports autonomy. The bnf-n does generally appear to support autonomy however. Rad da writer (talk) 23:11, 31 July 2023 (UTC)
It is all a bit thin. The UNPO source indicates that there indeed is activity directed towards autonomy, so there could definitely be a relevant movement to add. However, the first source mirrors only the official Pakistani view, so it does not have sufficient neutral strength to be useful. --T*U (talk) 06:35, 1 August 2023 (UTC)

Add Bashu Nationalists into minor independence movements in China section.

I know it is almost non-existent, but maybe it does count as an independence movement because there must be at least one person advocating for a independence movement, so that means that Bashu independence movement is a real independence movement. 2603:80A0:17F0:250:C90A:E07D:B9C7:3A91 (talk) 18:03, 1 August 2023 (UTC)
