Actual links in to the Guantanamo documents
[edit]When I started this article it was very difficult to find the text of the captives OARDEC documents. Much of the vertical space of this article is composed of the links to the OARDEC documents.
The NYTimes Guantanamo docket has made memos and transcripts much easier to access. But the habeas documents, and decision memos are still difficult to access.
I welcome discussion as to whether this field of the table should be cut. Geo Swan (talk) 02:10, 21 December 2009 (UTC)
- No feedback having been given to my question I am going to go ahead and trim links within the OARDEC documents. Geo Swan (talk) 17:29, 6 January 2010 (UTC)
Move discussion in progress
[edit]There is a move discussion in progress on Talk:Afghan captives in Guantanamo which affects this page. Please participate on that page and not in this talk page section. Thank you. —RM bot 15:15, 24 March 2010 (UTC)
Samir Naji al Hasan Moqbel Editorial
[edit]One of the detainees listed here, Samir Naji al Hasan Moqbel, has dictated an op-ed to the New York Times about the current ongoing hunger strike and other issues surrounding his detention. The article may be found here. Fascinating stuff, and might cause some editors to push for an article on this particular detainee. The title currently redirects to this list. FYI. The Iqinn legacy
[edit]An individual or individuals using the wiki-ID Iqinn made close to twenty thousands of edits to articles related to the war on terror. This wiki-ID was in constant conflict. Administrators were convinced they engaged in edit-warring, and placed the ID under a series of blocks of escalating duration. When Iqinn wouldn't stop edit-warring they had an indefinite block imposed on them.
The Iqinn ID targeted my contributions to a surprising extent. Over 80 percent of the edits from the individuals using the Iqinn ID were either to material I had initially contributed, or were about material I had initially contributed. Those individuals used the same tendetious techniques with me, when I tried to discuss their edits, as they did with everyone else. Every concern voiced, or question asked, was characterized as an "ad hominem" attack.
The tables at the heart of this article, and related articles, contained that actual release dates. Placing this information was a lot of work. Individuals using the Iqinn ID reformatted these tables, replacing the dates with the word "transferred". It was a change that wasn't a lot of work, eroded the value of the tables, and blew away a lot of work I had done. Typically, those behind the Iqinn ID would not discuss these destructive changes.
I have restored the table to the more useful form -- where table entries contain the arrival and departure dates, when known. Individuals with an empty departure date field are still in custody. Geo Swan (talk) 15:24, 27 January 2014 (UTC)
Re-linking the serial numbers
[edit]A no-doubt well-meaning contributor unlinked all the serial numbers. I relinked them. They are essential.
It took years to figure out who the individuals held at Guantanamo were. There are several reasons for this:
- Incompetent analysts at Guantanamo were unwilling or unable to use a consistent transliteration for the captives. Incompetent analysts at Guantanamo used more than half a dozen different ways of rendering some individuals names.
- Press reports use different transliterations than used at Guantanamo. It took me ages to figure out that Ahcene Zemiri and Hassan Zumiri were a single individual.
- Numerous Guantanamo captives were held under the wrong names because incredibly credulous US intelligence analysts in the field accepted deceitful denunciations from bounty hunters. JTF-GTMO held three different men they thought were a former Provincial Governor named Khirullah Khairkhwa.
- Close to fifty individuals held at Guantanamo have namesakes there -- other men with the exact same name.
- Many individuals held at Guantanamo are more widely known by aliases and nicknames
- Some individuals held at Guantanamo held at Guantanamo misrepresented their identities, for years.
It doesn't matter if the actual redirect ISN n has been deleted or redirected, if its "what links here" still points to all the articles and other material where that ID number is linked to. And, of course that hundreds of hours I put in to making sure our coverage of these men wasn't confused, all get blown away when a well-meaning person unlinks their ID numbers.
So, please, don't simply unlink their ID numbers. Geo Swan (talk) 13:37, 30 May 2015 (UTC)
