Plot details / spoilers
[edit]There's been quite a lot of discussion on the Westworld talk page about the character list. In the end, an RfC concluded to leave plot details and spoilers out of the character list, as these belong in the plot section or episode summary. The character description should describe the character's situation at the start of the series, without in-universe plot details and spoilers, much the way a character list in a book is composed. This way the character list can be used as a reference for people who are still watching the series. So, I wonder: should we apply a different policy here?
I urge everyone to not start the discussion again on this talk page. It has all been discussed ad nauseam on the Westworld talk page. Ad nauseam. Let's just focus on the difference, if any, between this page and the main Westworld page.
I'm not too sure about it, as the context is different here. One thing was clear from the RfC: people have wildly differing expectations from a character list. So the best solution would be a spoiler warning, imho. But alas, those are banned. What would the editers here feel if we keep the spoilers in, but phrase or layout the character discriptions in such a way, that it becomes clear what part is "character at start of series" and what part is "plot developments"? This more extensive characters page has room for this and that way a reader can feel it when a spoiler is ahead. We could even turn it into a table with Name / Onset / Plot columns. - Adding this at the end of Season 3, obviously we're keeping details light on on the main WW show page, but at this point, per WP:SPOILER we have to consider the events of S1 + S2 long to be fair game to be "common knowledge" and the spoilers of S3 going to little we can do to hide (eg unlike S1 where there was the big reveal that altered how S1 should have been reviewed, S3 didn't have that retro-review action). That said, and I haven't spent time looking, we also should be looking to see about standalone articles for Dolores, Maeve, Bernard, William, and Ford, at minimum. --Masem (t) 16:41, 4 May 2020 (UTC)
- The main article is fine as it is now, per consensus. However, I believe this article (the list) should not worry about spoilers. The only precaution I would take is highlighting the context of each paragraph, like so:
- Dolores Abernathy
Dolores Abernathy is portrayed by Evan Rachel Wood. BACKGROUND PARAGRAPH WITH LITTLE OR NO SPOILERS
"In season 1, ..." SEASON 1 PARAGRAPH WITH SPOILERS
"In season 2, ..." SEASON 2 PARAGRAPH WITH SPOILERS
"In season 3, ..." SEASON 3 PARAGRAPH WITH SPOILERS
I think this should be the way to go about this article, before even considering standalone articles for those characters you mentioned.--TheVampire (talk) 17:08, 4 May 2020 (UTC)
Status of Evan Rachel Wood in Season 4
[edit]Currently, Wood is listed in the table as not being a cast member for season 4, when in reality there are no sources stating that she will not return (or that she will return). IMDB currently lists her under one episode (s04e07), but about half of the episodes' cast lists on the database are missing key characters that are very likely to appear in each episode, such as Jeffrey Wright, meaning that it is probably not very reliable at the moment.[1] Hence, it makes sense for Wood's status to be listed as TBA, which was reverted by User:TheVampire. Other characters are listed as TBA as well, so we should establish consistency. --174.21.169.96 (talk) 11:06, 7 January 2022 (UTC)
- She will return, but not as Dolores. When her character is revealed, we will add it to the table.--TheVampire (talk) 11:07, 7 January 2022 (UTC)
- You are right, a simple lapse in judgement on my part. It may be good to have a footnote letting readers know that while her character may not return, she may. Nevertheless, it is quite late. --174.21.169.96 (talk) 11:12, 7 January 2022 (UTC)
