Alphabetical order and use of Nobel Prize icon

[edit]

I have reverted twice now, to restore alphabetic order to this list (grouped by sub-heading) and to remove Image:Nobel prize medal.svg from beside the names of Nobel prizewinners appearing here.

Alphabetic order is the simplest neutral way of presenting this list. A consensus was found, at this deletion debate, and in discussion elsewhere, against the use of the Nobel Prize medal as an icon. Accordingly, I will continue to revert edits which re-introduce the Nobel icon, or introduce arbitrary list order. Suggestions for other ordering systems are most welcome; I'm open to having missed something obvious. — mholland (talk) 14:00, 13 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Polly Graham & Layo Paskin

[edit]

I object to the inclusion of these to persons in this list of notable alumni. Neither person is ostensibly sufficiently notable for someone to have bothered to create an article on them as yet, and their inclusion adds little or nothing to the list. If persons of such minor notability were added to all university alumni lists then i dread to think how long and tiresome these lists would soon become. Also, i object to the linking of the aforementioned persons to articles in which they receive mention, i.e. Polly Graham. Linking in such a way misleads users into thinking that an article on the said person exists, when it does not, and moreover linking in such a way means that it becomes very difficult to verify whether an inclusion is notable. If however an article is created, and survives the test of time, then this confirms the notability of a person according to WP policy. 79.75.236.49 (talk) 16:47, 4 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

As I have already pointed out, not having a wiki article is not a basis for assuming non-notabilty. Do I need to point out the where that circular logic would have got Wikipedia? You have already been pointed at the WP:N page for a guide on notability before, have you read it yet? What is important is could they pass the criteria on that page not have they already got a page. Wikipedia is an ongoing project NOT a finished article, please bear that in mind. There are thousands (if not millions) of articles on people that will be added that havn't been added YET. From the project page.... "A notable alumnus ideally is somebody who has an article in Wikipedia, or would warrant one based on WP:BIO or WP:MUSIC." Thus not having a page is clearly not a bar to being included in such a list. The only questions that remains is could they pass the notability test on either WP:BIO or WP:MUSIC? Before replying to this I suggest you google "Layo", "Layo Paskin" and "Polly Graham" to get some idea of their notability. In each case you will note that almost all of the first page is hits on the person in question. That is a very strong indicator of notability. You seem to think that linking as I did to articles that are not specific bio's on the person is misleading in some way. As no articles existed for them I linked to what is available on wikipedia, in both cases articles which specifically mention them. I can't see how that could be misleading in any way.
As I have shown the question is whether they would warrant an article not do they currently have one let us have a quick look and see if they would. In the case of Layo Paskin we obviously have the article Layo & Bushwacka! which is about a top DJ and record producing duo of which he is half. We also have the article here on the club he co-founded and co-owned. We also have a number of articles such as this on records he has released. External links such as this one here put his notability beyond question as far as WP:MUSIC goes. As most of his work is done in the guise of a duo I dont' see any problem with linking to the article on the duo. As for Polly Graham this page alone, the first hit on google, aces the WP:BIO test. As you can see from that she has worked as a columnist of papers such as the Daily Mirror, Sunday Mirror and the News of the World, the latter being the newspaper with the highest circulation in the english speaking world. Being a colunist in any one of those publications would pass the notability test let alone all three. Add in the fact that she has often been on TV as a pundit as shown here and again the case for notability is beyond watertight. In this case linking to the The 3AM Girls page is not ideal but it is better than a red link. It was a high profile column of which she was one of the founding journalists.
I will give you 24 hours to reply before again re-adding my additions so as to avoid page disruption, unless anyone miraculously agrees with you that they are not in fact notable. May I suggest in future you discuss removing other editors work rather than just continually reverting. Using undo should be seen as a last option, not a first. If you wanted clarity on their notability fine, but vandalising someone's user page is not how an reasonable person asks for clarification. --LiamE (talk) 18:14, 4 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

OK, i accept your arguments. Add them again if you please. I still feel however that with university populations in the high tens of thousands, including every minor celebrity in sight could soon result in lists of overwhelming length, which take time to load, and which make an institutions most notable alumni harder to identify. For example imagine if someone decided to add every individual who has ever writen a column in a national newspaper to a list of oxford university alumni. sometimes a little bit of common sense is required, no matter how many policies you like to quote.79.75.236.49 (talk) 20:42, 4 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
