Handling NCAA Issues
[edit]Since the wikipedia policy is to follow the NCAA's record book, I've updated this article to remove the 14 vacated wins and the 1 vacated loss. The loss is not regularly vacated, but this resource (http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/stats/football_records/2015/bowls.pdf) shows that it should be. In addition, this resource (http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/stats/football_records/2015/conference.pdf) shows USC as the 2011 Pac-12 South champion, so I have highlighted that season with the divisional record. - @Embowaf: do you have the page number or direct quote that supports vacating the 2005 loss? They are shown as 0–1 at http://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/schools/southern-california/2005.html. Thanks.—Bagumba (talk) 02:18, 19 May 2016 (UTC)
- @Bagumba: Sure. Page 3, there is an asterisk on the 2006 Rose Bowl; it reads "*Southern California." The same asterisk appears for the 2005 Orange Bowl that USC played in on page 4. On team by team results, page 18, USC's record is shown as 33-16. The name is rendered as "Southern California*". Currently as of May 2016, USC has played in 52 Bowl Games, with a record of 34-18. Since this record has not yet been updated to show bowl games from the 2015 season, USC's record would have been 34-17 at the time. The NCAA therefore seems to consider 1 win and 1 loss vacated. On page 19, USC is shown to have 49 bowl appearances, also with an asterisk. Again, USC should have, at the time the document was current, 51 bowl appearances, less any vacated results. So again, 2 results were vacated. On page 27, Pete Carroll's list of Bowl games is shown as "D-2001, J-03, J-04, J-05*, J-06*, J-07, J-08, J-09, D-09" which is 9 games. He went 7-2 in those games. The NCAA here shows the record as 6-1, again showing and 1 win and 1 loss were vacated. There is do direct citation of the * that I saw in the Bowl Results section. The team by team section does however. Page 20 says "* Vacated by NCAA Committee on Infractions or by NCAA executive action." So it's pretty clear that the NCAA means it is vacated. If more data is needed, look here: http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/stats/football_records/2015/fbs.pdf (page 98) and here http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/usc/sports/m-footbl/auto_pdf/2015-16/misc_non_event/2015-media-guide.pdf (page 3). The NCAA and USC agree on a record of 805-327-54 (both documents are from following the 2014 season, so they don't include the 2015 season). USC mentions that the record does not include 14 wins and 1 loss vacated by penalty (there's also an error in the USC version. It says the original record was 810-324-54. This is because they mostly copy he previous year's media guide and forgot to update this line. USC went 9-4 in the 2014 season, which was the most recent season before this guide came out. Adding that, the original record should be 819-328-54, which once adjusted for the vacated games would be the record USC and the NCAA show, 805-327-54). In all of these cases, I'm using the most recent NCAA doc available. For reference, USC's current record is 827-334-54, which is adjusted to 813-333-54 by the NCAA.
