Alphabetical Order
[edit]the importance of CORRECT alphabetical order apparently needs to be emphasized.when one doesn't find an entry where it's supposed to be,one eners it there. then, finding it later somewhere else, double entry and much frustration ensues.e.g. CIWS. (i already deleted entry in wrong place.Toyokuni3 (talk) 07:15, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
i alphabetized the entries again today, and removed one or two duplicates (i made sure the duplicates didn't actually have two separate meanings). L1ght5h0w (talk) 19:04, 16 June 2017 (UTC)
Now at Wiktionary
[edit]This used to be a list like its Marine counterpart, now it is here. What gives? --ProdigySportsman (talk) 02:31, 16 February 2009 (UTC)
Acronyms from a recruit at RTC (to be added?)
[edit]My boyfriend is at Recruit Training Command right now for basic training. He has written quite a few acronyms that aren't included on this list. I'm not sure if they should be added or not, but here they are:
- NWU - Navy Working Uniform
- LLD - Light Limited Duty
I'll add more later Takaia (talk) 22:02, 27 October 2012 (UTC)
Links?
[edit]I've noticed some of the acronyms are given as links, but others are not, even though some of them lead to valid pages (for example: Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery). Was wondering if the list should be updated with valid links. L1ght5h0w (talk) 18:36, 16 June 2017 (UTC)
Non-acronyms
[edit]I have removed the following entries from the list as they are not acronyms by definition, but rather aliases or nicknames.
- Airedale - Aviation Sailor
- Bird Farm - Aircraft Carrier
- Black shoe - Refers to surface Navy personnel. AKA "shoe". Sometimes used in a derogatory manner among aviation Navy personnel. "Did you see what he did? Yea, he's just a f'in shoe."
- Boot - Lowest human in Naval Service, rookie, inexperienced
- Brown shoe - Refers to Aviation officers and Chief Petty Officers who wear brown shoes with khaki uniforms whereas surface Navy officers and CPOs wear black shoes.
- Bug Juice - Kool-Aid as typic
- Bull Ensign - Senior ranking Ensign, usually at the ship or aviation squadron level, in a given Fleet or Shore Establishment command
- Carrier (Lighter-than-air) (No longer in use)
- Flag Officer - Commissioned officer in the rank of Rear Admiral (Lower Half and Upper Half), Vice Admiral, Admiral or Fleet Admiral
- Flat Top - Aircraft Carrier
- Geedunk - Junk food, especially the variety found in vending machines.
- Hinge - LCDR
- Hoover - S-3A and S-3B Viking
- Hummer - E-2C and E-2D Hawkeye
- Metalsmith - AMS
- Operation GOLDENFLOW - Urinalysis Testing
- Plane Captain - Naval Aviation Crew Chief
- Scuttle - A small, round deck or bulkhead fitting with quick acting hand wheel. Also: to intentionally sink one's own ship to prevent capture by the enemy.
- Yellow Gear - Aviation Support Equipment
- Yellow Sheet - Document to sign custody of Naval Aircraft for flight
With the possible exception of AMS, if it is listed backwards.
I'm still going over and working on a few things on the list. L1ght5h0w (talk) 20:16, 16 June 2017 (UTC)
finished making edits for now. L1ght5h0w (talk) 21:53, 16 June 2017 (UTC)
Removed:
- Roof - Aircraft Carrier Flight Deck
L1ght5h0w (talk) 18:38, 18 June 2017 (UTC)
Removed:
- AOE - Fast Combat Support-Supply ship, operated by Military Sealift Command (US Merchant Marines)
- TILLIE - Large mobile crane on Flight Deck to pick up and move disabled aircraft. Came from original crane designation: T1-E
If AOE stands for something like an actual acronym, add it back and add what it stands for (i.e. AOE - Area of Effect). L1ght5h0w (talk) 21:09, 6 November 2017 (UTC)
Definition of acronyms
[edit]So, I know the standard definition of acronym, but it seems that some of the entries don't reflect the actual definition. Take for example:
- LHA - Amphibious Helicopter Assault (Amphibious Class Ship)
- LHD - Amphibious Helicopter Dock i.e. LHD-1 USS WASP (Follow on to LHA types)
- LKA - Amphibious Cargo Attack i.e. LKA-117 USS El Paso
- LPD - Amphibious Platform Dock (Amphibious Class Ship)
Shouldn't we include what the actual letters stand for as that is the meaning of the word acronym? Or should these not be on the list since they don't really seem to be acronyms, but rather naming conventions for ships? I'm removing them for now since the letters are not defined. Please add them back if I am wrong, or if someone can include what the letters stand for.

There are also some others such as
- CA - Heavy Cruiser (outdated)
- CG - Guided Missile Cruiser
- CGN - Guided Missile Cruiser, Nuclear Powered (outdated)
That don't seem to fit the acronym definition. L1ght5h0w (talk) 21:24, 6 November 2017 (UTC)
