Use of "The"

[edit]

I know there's a tendency for nicknames to include the word "The" in order to place greater emphasis on the nickname; as its use depicts some sort of "definitiveness". For the sake of this article and alphabetizing, it'll be nice to exclude "the" and leave it implied. Also, considering using a sortable table for the listing. Christian Okoye notability

[edit]
  • Nigerian Nightmare[citation needed] — Nickname given to Christian Okoye of the Kansas City Chiefs due to his large size, powerful running style and Nigerian roots. The moniker has also been used to refer to Houstan Texans defensive tackle Amobi Okoye, also from Nigeria.

Questioning notability of this entry. KyuuA4 (talk) 07:23, 29 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wouldn't this have been used for Hakeem Olajuwon as well? WAVY 10 Fan (talk) 02:22, 28 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Googling...
That's enough. It appears that it is a nickname for more than one person. However, it was certainly used for Christian Okoye. It is not possible if it was first used for him. -- kainaw 05:31, 1 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Merging Proposal

[edit]

Suggesting merging National Football League lore into this article. The NFL Lore has long faced the problem of "What is Lore and What is not Lore". Just see the discussions. Having a straight list (as NFL Nicknames) may do away with that problem all-together. If this list gets too big and cumbersome, then this can be dealt with later. KyuuA4 (Talk:キュウ) 23:42, 26 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

MERGE. I agree with a recent edit summary to this article that it is borderline POV (even worse, in fact). bigpad (talk) 19:49, 28 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
MERGE. I agree with anything to get rid of the lore page. I've been trying to delete it ever since I created it. -- kainaw 05:24, 1 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Strong oppose: You are basically trying to circumvent the deletion process and de facto delete the page. In fact, merging this would not even make sense, as lore and nicknames are two different things. If you want NFL Lore gone, nominate it for deletion, and let consensus decide. Toa Nidhiki05 16:20, 24 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Incorrect. Deletion never was my intent. Instead, this article runs into the trouble of "what is lore" vs "what isn't lore". On top of that, "lore" isn't even clearly defined; and there had been several attempts to set criteria for it. I suppose; it'd be nice to have a consensus on that. Title of article

[edit]

I click on List of NFL nicknames thinking it was a list of the current nfl teams nicknames and how they were choosen, instead its a list of made nicknames for teams and players. Smith03 (talk) 17:29, 18 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

"Ghost"

[edit]

Is there any question that "ghost" refers to Dave Casper as in "ghost to the post" and not Stephen Gostkowski (whoever he is)? 68.227.130.226 (talk) 01:42, 3 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Missing individuals/defensive line

[edit]

I noticed "The Fearsome Foursome", "Night Train Lane", and several other names were not on the list. Can we please make it a complete list? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.17.242.41 (talk) 23:37, 20 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Deleting phony nicknames with extreme prejudice

[edit]

I think this is a worthwhile page, but I have noticed a lot of very spurious nicknames. I don't think that every single nickname needs to be cited (because a lot are absolutely common knowledge), but just in case people weren't clear, this isn't a place where people should put nicknames given by themselves and their buddies and that aren't in regional/national use. (No one calls Tedi Bruschi "The Bear," no one remembers the 2008 Ravens as "the three headed monster," and no one knows who the "Junkyard Dogs" in Cleveland are.) Rule of thumb: do a partial Google search and use the autocomplete function. So when you put in "Tom Brady California C" and nothing comes up, it probably means that nobody besides you and your uncle call Tom Brady "California Cool." (Besides, everyone knows Joe Montana is "Joe Cool" anyway.) Not to sound like the arbiter of all things NFL, but if I see a b.s. nickname, I will delete the living crap out of it. That is all. Bill shannon (talk) 06:26, 6 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No, they do need to be cited, otherwise the article will become rife with what each person claims is "common knowledge" and will become useless. If a nickname is really that well-known it should be no problem to find one citation for it. —Al E.(talk) 16:18, 5 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The same applies to people repeatedly (could be the same person moving around) adding in this particular statement:

The Term [The Planet Earth's Team] was given to the New Orleans Saints by the Local New Orleans Fans after the Saints have captured their first ever Super Bowl victory by defeating Future Hall of Famer Quarterback of the Indianapolis Colts, Peyton Manning in a commanding 31-17 Victory! It's been also said that the term was given to the Saints because the whole world was backing up the Saints due to the most disastrous events in the City's history in Hurricane Katrina and they wanted to observe a resurgence of the positive energy of the people in New Orleans. Not to mention during the "Lombardi Gras" Super Bowl Parade, it's been said that over 1 Million People participated in the parade from Germany and Switerland which is the most in NFL History

Eagles Gang Green Defense

[edit]

According to philadelphiaeagles.com the "Gang Green" defense was 1991 not 1987-1990 source. That would have been the year after Buddy Ryan was the head coach. The head coach was Rich Kotite and the defensive coordinator was Bud Carson source. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Plindsay01 (talkcontribs) 16:19, 6 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Inaccurate Nickname

[edit]

I caught a B.S. nickname and corrected it. LT2 is not LaDainian Tomlinson's nickname. LT is neither he or Lawrence Taylor's nickname. These are initials. If you use your initials you are not required to place a number behind it because others in the past have had those same initials. LT2 is only used by Giants fans and a very few people that dislike LaDainian Tomlinson for some personal reason. The rest of the NFL Community refers to LaDainian Tomlinson as LT. The Swami

[edit]

Under "Places," the second entry, "The Giant Crabcake," listed Chris Mortenson as "The Swami." This is the nickname of Chris Berman. As I don't know (there's no reference) if it was said by Mortenson or Berman, I removed that part. If anyone can figure out who actually said it, please put it back. Additional Tom Brady Rules

[edit]

Wondering if we should add the following Tom Brady rules to the list:

  • Tuck Rule - pretty well known, no explanation needed
  • Nameplate Rule - When Kyle Brady joined the Patriots team, players were required to have initials on their jerseys in case of identical last names. After fan outcry about having to buy "T. Brady" jerseys, NFL amended its rule to solely having last names as acceptable.

boldface

[edit]

Per MOS:BOLD, the typical use of boldface "is to highlight the first occurrence of the article's title word or phrase in the lead section. This is also done at the first occurrence of a term (commonly a synonym in the lead) that redirects to the article or one of its subsections, whether the term appears in the lead or not." I did some spot-checking, and didn't find any nicknames that direct to this article, although it's certainly possible that some do. We should remove instances of bold that do not conform to the manual of style. ~TPW 16:31, 28 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Biased/Unused nickname

[edit]

as an advid football fan I have never heard anyone call brock purdy "big cock brock" also lamar Jackson is missing big truzz ArizonacardinalsFan (talk) 03:38, 24 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Also if offensive nicknames are allowed with barely any citing other than one use case than asstronaut probably could be added for joshua dobbs ArizonacardinalsFan (talk) 03:50, 24 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

49er fans are genuinely pissing me off.

[edit]

Okay. it's one thing to have a bias for a sports team but when you keep vandalizing the page to benefit your fanbase, it's fucking ridiculous. I don't see Eagles fans vandalizing FedEx field and calling it 'Lincoln South' or Packers fans calling Ford Field 'Lambeau East'. I'm gonna request a protection on the page if I see that shit again.
