Merge

[edit]

I don't see a need for this list. Why not simply add at the bottom of the "Regional Branch Libraries" section something like "The following are the Regional Family History Centers:" and list the "Regional Branch Libraries". The majority of the libraries on this list are Regional ones. That only leaves "London", "Los Angeles", "Riverton", and "San Diego" and maybe BYU (I’m not sure if it’s Regional or Multi-Stake). These libraries can be put at the bottom of the "Multi-Stake FHC" section after saying something like "The following are Large Multi-stake Family History Centers that are "Library Class": Then is orphaned stub list (that will never be more then a stub) that will probably in our lifetime never include more then a few more items, wont be needed anymore.--ARTEST4ECHO (talk/contribs) 18:34, 16 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The merge makes sense, and would improve the quality of the related WP articles. -- 208.81.184.4 (talk) 20:20, 16 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I have been trying to figure out what would work for BYU. The BYU Family History Library is apparently different then the "Regional Branch Libraries" and "Multi-Stake FHC". So I think that making a new subsection (===BYU Family History Library===) and then putting the entire "BYU Family History Library, part of the Harold B. Lee Library, Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah. The BYU Family History Library was one of the original planned FHCs." in it's own section would be best.--ARTEST4ECHO (talk/contribs) 21:06, 16 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That list is blatantly non-encyclopedic, and violative of WP:NOT#DIRECTORY. It either merges into the larger article, or gets deleted. --Orange Mike | Talk 21:26, 16 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think Orangemike makes a very valid point. So the question now becomes should it be merged or should it be listed in Wikipedia:Articles for deletion.--ARTEST4ECHO (talk/contribs) 21:44, 16 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
After a second look at the list, the only notable entry is the library at BYU. This list appears to really be a wp:NOBLECAUSE attempt without establishing wp:V/wp:N, so a wp:AFD nomination is justified. -- 208.81.184.4 (talk) 01:56, 17 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This list was part of the article. Until the following event happened...

  • 17:18, 1 July 2010 Frecklefoot (talk | contribs) (10,443 bytes) (→Regional Branch Libraries: it's not our job to keep an up-to-date list on these -- we link to a site that has these)

I like the idea of a merge back into the article. Of the 4,000 plus FHC run by the LDS Church, there is really only 16-17 (depending how you count them) "Library class" facilities. If anyone can find a list of these "Library class" FHCs on line that we can link too - without the grabage of 4,000 other smaller FHCs - please let me know. If there is a list, then we can delete this one. If no list can be found, then this list should be merged under the Family History Center (LDS_Church)#Regional Branch Libraries. Jrcrin001 (talk) 02:48, 17 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I checked with the Family Search person at the local FHC. They want the list preserved. So, see here. It will be about a week to confirm its approval. Then this list can be deleted and a link provided in the article Family History Center (LDS Church). If it is not approved, then merging it is the best option. I do appreciate the active role you are playing, unfortunately I don't think it matters what the FHC wants. This has to do with WP rules and finding a consensus. This list is a violation of WP:NOT#DIRECTORY.--ARTEST4ECHO (talk/contribs) 14:02, 17 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Trying reach a consensus

[edit]

I think we need to proceed in deciding what to do.

Merge: I think Frecklefoot was wrong to remove the items from the article. I see items like this in article all the time, the information is helpful and valid, and the information isn’t going to change any faster than any other page, so keeping "up-to-date list on these" isn't going to be any harder then keeping an article up to date. The LDS church doesn’t build “Library class” FHC every weekend.--ARTEST4ECHO (talk/contribs) 14:02, 17 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Merge: Either into article or under external links. Jrcrin001 (talk) 21:56, 17 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's clear that the consensus is that this list shouldn't exist as is. Since Jrcrin001 (the list creator) agrees to a merge, I have done just that.--ARTEST4ECHO (talk/contribs) 13:33, 20 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
