POV
[edit]- This is a chronological list of significant cases brought to the International Court of Justice since its creation in 1946.
Without a reliable source to qualify the statement there is no way of knowing if the list consists of those which any contributer to the page has added as their own preferences, or if indeed it is a list of the most significant cases as quoted by an outside authority. --Philip Baird Shearer 18:15, 12 November 2006 (UTC)
- Agreed. Do you have any suggestions for rephrasing? 24.20.254.29 05:59, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

List cases, not events
[edit]I think the linking to the events is problematic here. All 138 cases are notable and linking to the events makes it not a red link (when it should be). I think it would be better to even make placeholder pages that also link to the events rather than to link to the events and not the cases. gren グレン 18:10, 12 May 2008 (UTC)
- Generally this may be correct, but not always. Five years from the original post and Corfu Channel Case and Corfu Channel Incident are two separate articles. As it stands, the incident page is far more developed. While one may argue that the facts of the incident are the background of the case and the diplomatic responses are the aftermath, it may also be that there are aspects of the incident not really considered part of the case. Yet much of the material in the incident page can easily be in the case page. If a merger occurs, it may be better to just incorporate the case as a section in the incident page. I am not yet saying this should happen, but if it did, then a link to the incident page, or to the case section of the incident page would be appropriate.
- On the other hand, as it currently stands, the Barcelona Traction page, purportedly about the company itself, is entirely dedicated to the case. The possible exception is more specific involvement of Juan March Ordinas, who has his own page. Again, I haven't reviewed it enough to take action myself at this time, but it appears that Barcelone Traction should be moved to Barcelona case. IMHO (talk) 18:27, 7 March 2013 (UTC)
There are not 138 cases, there are more than 160 cases. A list of cases by country and UN organ involved may be found here: International Encyclopedia of Law International Court of Justice list of cases by country and UN organ79.157.194.221 (talk) 17:32, 10 October 2014 (UTC)

Judgement or Judgment
[edit]The ICJ is not consistent with its spelling of Judg(e)ment. Their database uses judgment but different cases use different spellings which in recent years seem to be related to the English used by the country in front of the court.
- http://www.icj-cij.org/docket/files/101/7633.pdf (CAMEROlON V. NIGERIA) uses judgement
- http://www.icj-cij.org/docket/files/72/6547.pdf United Nations uses judgement
- http://www.icj-cij.org/docket/files/139/14647.pdf (Mexico v. United States of America) judgment
But the first judg(e)ment http://www.icj-cij.org/docket/files/1/1569.pdf The first case (United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland v. Albania) use "Judgment" so the cases are not consistent. (It was probably American spelling throughout until at some time it became politically correct to use the local spelling.
I suggest that we use in the title of the judg(e)ments whatever is used in the ICJ judgments but that for the rest of the text we use the American spelling as is used by the ICJ database. --Philip Baird Shearer (talk) 09:48, 23 July 2008 (UTC)
Table
[edit]- OK, I have moved substantially all of the info from the original page onto this table, which I think is a lot easier to read. I am going to replace the list with this table.Erudy (talk) 19:37, 10 February 2014 (UTC)
Sorting by date columns
[edit]The non standardization of dates in the dates columns makes it impossible to use the sort feature. due to technical issues (lexical ltr sorting) I propose changing all dates into a single format: YYYY-MM-DD free text
for example Judgment on Jurisdiction 4 December 1998 would be changed to 1998-12-04 Judgment on Jurisdiction
of course the format may change (use spaces instead of dashes) but the easiest solution is numerical 4 digit year, 2 digit month (with possible leading zeros, 2 digits day-of month (with possible leading zeros). 84.108.61.204 (talk) 06:50, 25 April 2014 (UTC)
- This is definitely a valid criticism. I believe the solution is to use Template:Dts, which would allow the use of "normal" looking dates, but make them sortable in the table. Unfortunately, this will take a bunch of work. This table already needs a lot of work in terms of bare completion, so it might take a while to get this improvement. You can help!Erudy (talk) 01:52, 3 July 2014 (UTC)

Removed "needs update" tag
[edit]User:22merlin added this tag in July 2018. The page was quite outdated. Gradually since June, I updated it so the recent information is all current - hence I removed the tag. OK? (There is still a problem with a batch of older cases that do not list a disposition.) Sullidav (talk) 00:01, 6 September 2019 (UTC)
Recent edits, and spelling
[edit]In the last couple days somebody has combined rows that have the same information on parallel cases. I don't care about the country columns, but I think this is a bad idea for the last 3 columns - they are about separate cases with separate case numbers and different dockets and different decisions (though as related companion cases that were filed and often resolved on the same dates, and with their separate decisions often largely repeating the same language). The ICJ does not combine related cases into one, as some national courts (eg, the US Supreme Court) do. As an example, the combined last 3 columns for cases 158/159/160 should be split back up into 3 rows. But as a minimal fix if they are kept the same, the last column should plural-ize "Judg[]ment" to "Judgments" because as it now is, this box is about 3 cases and 3 judgments.
Also this page's spelling of "Judgment" or "Judgement" should track the Court's spelling, which I believe (from a quick spot-check of 18 of them, dated 1963-2016) is consistently the better, no-e version. [Addendum: I saw this issue was discussed above in 2008, but current usage does not track the Court's, as in those cases 158, 159, & 160.] Sullidav (talk) 22:06, 29 January 2020 (UTC)
Worldlii links?
[edit]Would someone be so good as to add the Worldlii links in a new column to this? Or make a start? I would try myself, but I'm often unclear about which document is the final judgment, and would very much appreciate the help (or guidance here, and I can do it if explained). Israeli occupation of Palestine - finished?
[edit]Is item 186 = ICJ case on Israel's occupation of the Palestinian territories finished? There's certainly an advisory opinion issued 19 July 2024. Boud (talk) 02:24, 20 July 2024 (UTC)
