Removal of faculty no longer associated with GT
[edit]Can we remove the names of people who are no longer associated with GT? It's just not practical to list every single professor who taught at GT at one point or another. --Jiuguang Wang (talk) 22:40, 3 July 2008 (UTC)
- By that reasoning, reference to Clough should be removed. If limits were to be placed, perhaps they should be on those who have not been on the Faculty more than 10 years (i.e., when a Faculty member becomes "vested", or 25 years (when a Faculty member gets the Gold GT 25 year recognition)). I do think that a lot of recent grad student "faculty" or unestablished "short timers" might populate the list, but the question is (IMHO): "is this mere list of past faculty members? a list of distinguished faculty members (and what constitutes "distinction"?), or what?". Compared to other Wikipedia lists, this one is not particularly long. I do think that there could be a problem with excessive photos due to space limitations. Just because one is on the list does not mean that their smiling face needs to be posted. I think photos should typically show something significant about the person (e.g., astronauts in their space suits, faculty members with their inventions, faculty members in uniform or with heads of state, faculty members in the act of receiving awards (like having a Nobel prize medal placed around one's neck). - Good point...perhaps we should create separate lists for current faculty, distinguished past faculty, etc...--Jiuguang Wang (talk) 15:28, 4 July 2008 (UTC)
- People come and go all the time... you might even have "visiting professors" who show up for the summer semester putting their names on the list. My current thinking is that there should be some sort of "commitment" to GT by the faculty member before a name goes on the list (that would weed out all of the churn at the bottom). The 10-year "vested with the university system" criteria might be a logical demarcation as anyone contributing as faculty for 10+ years has shown commitment and not just another job listing on their resume. An easy way to monitor that would be to add a column: "Years at GT". Anyone who couldn't put a number >10 would not make the list. Of course that could eliminate some notable faculty (for example, the not-so-popular GT President Crecine who, as I recall was not at GT for 10 years, would not make the list, but maybe we make exceptions for university presidents.
