Bristol

[edit]

Why is Bristol listed at 46, when with the population that is listed it should be 41? Why is Brighton listed (and linked to) instead of Brighton and Hove? Shouldn't the title of this article be "List of English administrative counties by population"? After all it doesn't list traditional or ceremonial counties, but administrative ones. Date

[edit]

shouldnt this page have a date at the top stating when these figures were gathered - otherwise how can one tell whether these are still accurate figures or not? Tyhopho 19:07, 10 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Where is Warrington?

[edit]

Where is little Warrington? Is it clubbed with Halton? Anwar 01:45, 25 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Not exhaustive, is it?

[edit]

West Yorkshire and West Midlands are shown but not the counties therein. This list is not comparabale with ONS format of economic data. Anwar 23:07, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Merger

[edit]

Hi all!, I would like to propose a merger of List of English counties by area and to List of English counties by population to List of counties and unitary districts of England. I feel that there is duplication in the two separate articles and that the information carried in the two would be more useful in a single sortable table. I have chosen a slightly different name (similar to that of the former population density article) for the destination as in my opinion this better describes the contents of the article.Pit-yacker (talk) 02:32, 20 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

What are your plans regarding the Metropolitan Districts as the ONS treats them statistically as if they are unitary districts? As you know they effectively but not legally hold that status. Fingerpuppet (talk) 07:24, 26 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
To be honest, I hadn't really thought at this stage. My main concern was whether a number of very similar articles would be more useful as one sortable list. In this case i felt that list of English counties... Was also an inappropriate name for the article as this article currently contains data relating to unitary authorities that do not cover whole counties. The name I chose was based on the title of the population density article which I merged to the by population article as it had been tagged for merger for almost 2years without comment. I'm not altogether clear on which authorities should and should not be included in this article. Is it the case that List of English counties would be an appropriate name for this article, or is this series of articles already incorrect as it stands?Pit-yacker (talk) 00:36, 28 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The titles are technically incorrect as some unitary authorities in the list such as Reading and West Berkshire are not legally defined as counties, but as districts within the (administrative) county of Berkshire (that has no county council). Effectively, they're in the same legal position as the metropolitan districts. Other unitary authorities such as Blackpool and Derby do indeed cover entire (administrative) counties. Fingerpuppet (talk) 08:58, 28 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
No opinion as to what the article should be called but I support merging. There's no need for separate articles that are essentially the same list but with a different sort key, given that the user can sort the table by whatever column they choose. I don't think issues about the article's name should be a barrier to merging. Look at it this way: at the moment, we have two badly named articles ("List of English counties by population" and "... by area"); if we merge them into "List of English counties", there's only one badly named article. I, Kai from Norwich ALSO support the merging of the county local authorities list with the unitary authorities list, to create a list of all upper level English local authorities, complete with population figures. Let's get this done. I hope it happens soon, as the earlier such page now has a rather unpleasant redivert on it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.21.213.200 (talk) 22:02, 19 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Nonsense list

[edit]

Starting with the obvious: Greater London is neither a county nor a unitary authority. And the Isles of Scilly, whilst a unitary area, are certainly not a county. Argovian (talk) 15:26, 28 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

There should be a list of non-metropolitan and metropolitan counties (this would cover everywhere except for Greater London and the Isles of Scilly) and a link to the list of ceremonial counties article. Argovian (talk) 20:35, 28 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
