I think there should be a way to tell what books each characters appears in and if it is a part of the story or just in quotes at the begining of a chapter or if they are a minor or secondy character. I am unshure of how to lay this out. Does anyone have any ideas?Xylon.doulas 14:32, 20 October 2006 (UTC)

I've thought about that myself; perhaps by changing the list into a table, with a narrow column for each book. A character gets a "check" for every book in which they appear, and some other mark/letter if they are a minor character. I'm wondering if any other multibook series do something similar on Wikipedia (the Ice and Fire books and the Wheel of Time series don't). It may be overkill; most character articles reference somewhere in the text which books the character is in. TAnthony 15:05, 20 October 2006 (UTC).

Additional names

I think it would be helpful to add the nicknames and other names certain characters have, in brackets beside their real names. for example: Usul, Sihaya, Hayt... i spent a while trying to remeber who 'Harq al'Ada' was, and i couldn't find it on this list. any abjections? --Someones life 08:30, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

Split?

I believe that this article should be split into a more detailed article(s). That way, it will be more easily readable that a "table of Contents".--SGCommand (talkcontribs) 14:51, 2 October 2007 (UTC)

It is merely meant to be a comprehensive list, more of a navigational tool than anything else; nearly all the significant characters listed already have an article of their own or are part of a larger article. The more I think about it, expanding this list with explanatory text only generates more redundant info. Do you have another reason that I'm missing? TAnthony 15:01, 2 October 2007 (UTC)
If I may use as an example the Characters in the Inheritance Trilogy article we discussed previously, that article is appropriate because there are virtually no individual character articles for the Inheritance series. Per standard Wikipedia procedure, when certain sections become too lengthy, they would be split out into their own articles, with a link and perhaps a small amount of overview/descriptive text left in the original article. The opportunity to use this format for Dune has long since come and gone, and minor characters not needing their own articles have been collected in List of Dune Bene Gesserit and List of Dune Fremen. I really don't see any value in adding more descriptive info for characters than is already there; the list gives you an idea how they are related, and provides links to the articles with more information. @Randy Kryn, TAnthony, Atlantic306, Dream Focus, Jack Upland, and Sgeureka: The main list is merely a collection of names. We could probably halve this article without losing any real content. The other two articles are more in-depth, but they are mostly focused on minor characters. I suggest that we merge these three lists into a comprehensive list of the franchise's major characters. After the merge, the other two articles should be deleted, as they are implausible search terms. The list of Fremen can simply be deleted, as it has no real value. While we could make lists for each individual novel, that would be unwieldy. How would nineteen different lists help the project? Those lists would be difficult to navigate and full of non-notable content. ―Susmuffin Talk 10:05, 24 December 2019 (UTC)

  • Support merging all. For inspiration, here is what I did in a similar situation with various fictional-race character lists in Stargate SG-1: original version => List of Stargate SG-1 characters now. The former Ancient characters in Stargate needed to be split into List of Stargate SG-1 characters#Ancients and List of Stargate Atlantis characters#Ancients, but that wasn't a problem either and was interlinked with hatnotes. Characters who appear prominently in several Stargate series either are so notable to have a stand-alone article, or receive a section in several lists, each only listing that character's relevance for each particular series. – sgeureka tc 11:00, 24 December 2019 (UTC
  • Strong Oppose, the well-sourced Dune Bene Gesserit article was well on its way to be kept in a deletion request when a course change was applied, so keep that one for sure. The secondary character page is well sourced, so keeping that one is an easy choice. Keep all the pages separate, no need for a merge. Maybe just stop the culling of sourced and long-time Dune pages. • Oppose Four people say KEEP in a deletion discussion so the nominator closes the AFD on their own, which isn't allowed, and says to change it into a merge discussion instead. [1] Ridiculous. Also no way to merge even one of those two articles to the main character list article, it'd be far too long, so its the same as delete which consensus is against. Dream Focus 15:19, 24 December 2019 (UTC)
  • Oppose I understand and appreciate your motivation on this, and certainly List of Dune Fremen is weak and should be redirected. But as noted in the AFD, flatly merging the robust List of Dune Bene Gesserit back into List of Dune characters would, I believe, make that master list unwieldy. Similarly, List of Dune secondary characters is a well-sourced list of characters who do not warrant their own article but are notable to the franchise and warrant a bit more coverage than a short list entry. I can see some potential in trimming and reformatting List of Dune characters in some way, but I don't think this proposal is exactly what we need.— TAnthonyTalk 15:40, 24 December 2019 (UTC)
I will say, while this list's primary function seems to be as a helpful navigation tool, it contains many "incidental" characters who are basically just named somewhere in the text and are otherwise not really notable in context of the series. When this discussion is over I'd like to trim some of that cruftiness ("Tecrube, a Fremen and imperial clerk"??) and see what can be done to consolidate the lists. I do like the idea of a more robust central list but I think it would still likely need offshoots. I'm on a three-foot-wide gaming screen and List of Stargate SG-1 characters still looks hella long from my perspective.— TAnthonyTalk 17:26, 24 December 2019 (UTC)
  • Oppose as too large to manage for readers with poor internet with slow loading as per WP:Notpaper, imv Atlantic306 (talk) 22:19, 24 December 2019 (UTC)
  • I just fixed the merge discussion link from List of Dune Bene Gesserit to here, it formerly linking to that article's talk page where no discussion was at at all. [2] Dream Focus 03:58, 26 December 2019 (UTC)
  • Support - Even taking current size into consideration, it wouldn't be overly large to the point of ridiculousness. After gutting infoboxes and many unnecessary paragraphs, I'm sure you'd cut it down to way under half anyway. Cut all the non-linked characters on this page, refine the incoming entries, and you'll have a list that easily fits all three pages. Wikipedia doesn't have a duty to cover every inconsequential character. TTN (talk) 17:56, 26 December 2019 (UTC)
