Sorbability issues

[edit]

This article's statistics aren't sorting properly. Being that it's a featured list, that should probably be fixed. Does anyone know how to fix this that wouldn't mind taking care of it? Pinging @Resolute: since you put the article through its FLC. Gloss 06:22, 11 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I was actually noticing that myself yesterday. I think the problem is that the sortability function does not understand how to handle an empty cell, which causes the table to default to a form of alpha sorting, thus breaking the numeric sorting. I might have to ask the people who know the underlying code if that can be fixed. Resolute 14:19, 11 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Resolute: It looks like the issue can be fixed by adding in {{sort dash}} to the empty cells. If you think you'd be able to get around to adding those in, that'd be great, but if not I could possibly get around to it eventually! Gloss 01:35, 13 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Testing something...

H1 H2 H3 H4
100 41 100 31
93 12 93 3
16 2 16 4
3 0 3 0
0 13
3 0

H1 H2 H3 H4 H5
100 41 6 31 100
93 12 98 3 93
16 2 5 4 247
3 0 0 0 148
0 13 122
3 1 0
921 44 103 111

Looks like {{sortdash}} doesn't do anything here. H1 and H3 on the first table are with and without sortdash, both are broken the same way. What I don't understand though is how H1 on the second table is the same as on the first, except with one more row - and it sorts fine. Resolute 15:49, 13 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The whole table might need the sort templates on each number.
H1 H2 H3 H4 H5
100 41 6 31 100
93 12 98 3 93
16 2 5 4 247
3 0 0 0 148
0 13 122
3 1 0
921 44 103 111

Looks like that worked. Gloss 17:53, 13 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, wrapping every single cell in a sort template does work, but I think that is also a tremendously bad workaround when the problem exists in the table coding itself. Aside from bloating the size of the page, a list such as this runs a high risk of hitting the template limit. Resolute 19:43, 13 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I had no idea a template limit existed. Gloss 20:02, 13 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia:Template limits. I recall a few VPT and ANI threads in the past about problems caused when a page hit the limit. Resolute 20:54, 13 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting. It's used in List of Detroit Red Wings draft picks and was suggested to me during the List of New York Islanders players list I believe, so I used it again while putting together List of New York Islanders draft picks. It is a very big workload, though. Gloss 21:13, 13 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
