Inverted Star?

[edit]

Article includes the following text: "Unlike Warrant Officers or Staff Corps officers, an LDO wears the Unrestricted Line Star insignia."

But this [1] USN page states the following: "...Staff corps LDOs wear their specialty insignia on the sleeve..."

Therefore, not all LDOs wear the URL star on their sleeves, like the article is implying.

USMC

[edit]

Please clean up the article to be USMC inclusive. And make clear the following information.

To become an LDO:

  • for the Navy, the minimum pay grade is E-7 (Chief Petty Officer). E-6 (Petty Officer 1st Class) only if they've been selected to be promoted to E-7.
  • the USMC only selects from W-2 (Chief Warrant Officer 2) and up.

Actually, a PO1 need not be selected for chief to apply for LDO - that's warrent officer. I have known, and worked for many MM1s who have gone LDO without being selected for MMC. I even considered going that route, myself. If you want to add the section on the USMC, feel free. I only wrote the parts about the navy, since that's what I actually know about. Actually, Jigen, the most recent edits you've made have added in some serious inaccuracies and confusion. They should likely be removed and reworked, since I don't think they say what you wish them to say. Izuko 03:52, 18 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, clean it up for me since you seem to know more about the Navy. Please leave in the USMC portion. Thanks. Jigen III 05:09, 18 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Specifically, a 1st Class must be board eligible for Chief in order to screen for and be selected for LDO. Sonlee

LDO/CWO/Restricted Line

[edit]

Persons with LDO commissions are similiar to CWO in that they specialize in a specific area. Like CWO's, LDO's are former enlisted technicians promoted through the ranks. This however is where the similarity ends. CWO's are technical officer specialists; LDO's are technical officer managers. The scope of a CWO's authority doesn't change a whole lot as one advances from CWO2-CWO5. However, just like their unrestricted line brethren, LDO's scope of authority broadens and increases as one promotes to lieutenant junior grade, lieutenant, lieutenant commander, commander.....etc. Usually first class petty officers and junior chief petty officers move into the LDO program. While chiefs with 10+ or more years of service, senior and master chiefs usually are placed in the CWO program. Also CWO's can move into the LDO program but do so as lieutenant junior grade skipping ensign. In some respects LDO career's are more similar to restricted line officers. The main difference between the two is that restricted line officers obtained their designation through their educational background (i.e. advanced degrees in engineering) while LDO's knowledge comes from more practical, hands on experience. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Tafh (talkcontribs) 02:23, 6 January 2007 (UTC).[reply]
