The sentence above is copied verbatim from The Hindu article. Plagiarism is taken very seriously here on Wikipedia, and persistent plagiarism will even get you blocked. The info must be rewritten in your own words. I have taken the liberty to do so for you here:

"The huge watchtower in the hill served as a base for the British, from where many many resident commanders of the British Navy would monitor the movement of travelling ships."
