Liberdade (Freedom, in Portuguese) has this name because the hanging square that was used to hang slaves and other criminals. They used to say, at that time, that "hanging" was the only freedon a slave would find (it was named Campos da Forca, or Gallons Camp). Still today, people use to go there to light candles for the souls of the dead.

The Igreja da Santa Cruz (Holy Cross Church) there is more comnly know by the name of Igreja dos Enforcados (Church of the Hangeg). At the beggining of XIX century, a soldier called Francisco José das Chagas, (AKA "Chaguinhas") was sentenced to be hang in public square because he leaded a rebelion against the late payment of military soldiers. The rope broke up several times, during the execution, and the people on square started to cry out for his freedom, believing that qhat they was witnessing was a miracle. Chaguinhas was free from the hang, but was killed with wood strokes and buried on the Slaves Cemitery, where now is the Igreja dos Aflitos (Church of the Aflicted).

"Liberdade" started to became a japanese neighbourood around 1920, because there was cheap apartments and houses to rent, and japanese imigrators in Brazil was relatively poor. They started to live in Liberdade, to stay close to São Paulo city (looking for jobs in construction, mostly) and started they community on the area.
