Only the official opposition contains a shadow cabinet in Westminster democracies. Other opposition parties select critics, not shadow cabinet ministers.

All parties can have shadow cabinets, in Canada critics is often used because it's a better description of what they are. Newfoundlander&Labradorian (talk) 10:41, 2 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Disagree. As noted above, only Her Majesty's Loyal Opposition can form a shadow cabinet under Westminster democracies. Other opposition parties can have critics, but not a shadow cabinet. Indeed funding for shadow ministries is only provided to the Official Opposition. 154.20.67.132 (talk) 16:46, 6 June 2011 (UTC) Paul T.[reply]

They are all called critics whether they are the official opposition or not. Shadow cabinet is a stupid term anyways but if anyone can provide proof that the third, fourth or fifth parties cannot have "shadow cabinets" then please do and the name of the article can be changed. Why don't you guys just refer to the main Shadow Cabinet article? "The Shadow Cabinet is a feature of the Westminster system of government. It comprises a senior group of opposition spokespeople who, under the leadership of the Leader of the Opposition, form an alternative cabinet to that of the government" (emphasis added). Trudeau wasn't the Leader of the Opposition, Mulcair was. Ergo the Liberals weren't the Opposition, the NDP was. Therefore the Liberals could not, by definition, form a "shadow cabinet". 192.0.158.233 (talk) 21:50, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
