Name Change

[edit]

The article is about the let-7 microRNA family - not about a specific let-7 pri-miRNA or pre-miRNA. The name of the article should be changed to "let-7", "let-7 microRNA", "let-7 microRNA family", or similar. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.119.202.121 (talk) 15:28, 13 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Strongly agree! The current name is not appropriate. It would be like naming the p53 article "p53 mRNA." I recommend "let-7 microRNA family" as it would make no sense to have separate articles for the different let7 members. Jared BioE (talk) 01:26, 26 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

A potential reference lead

Israel-led team finds clues to aging in fruit fly testicles A new study led by Hila Toledano of Haifa University helps explain why adult stem cells age and suggests ways to fight it. By Asaf Shtull-Trauring, 2012-07-09
Short of it is let-7 interferes with niche-stem cell communication, stem cells eventually only differentiate rather than produce new stem cell (let-7 stops Imp, which destabilizes Upd, reducing proper self renewal of stem cells). — al-Shimoni (talk) 13:35, 11 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Change name to Let-7 microRNA Family

Let-7 microRNA precursorLet-7 microRNA family – It is not advisable to name the article about this important microRNA after its precursor. For context, this would be similar to naming the "p53" article "p53 mRNA". I propose renaming to either "let-7" or, preferably, "let-7 microRNA family" (per WP:PRECISION), as there are multiple variants of let-7 with very slight differences and it does not make sense to give them all separate articles at this time. This seems to be the dominant usage in the literature (WP:COMMONNAME. Compare pubmed hits for "miRNA precursor" vs "miRNA family" and you will see the later has almost 2x number of hits. In addition, miRNA precursor seems to be mostly used in the body of articles, whereas "miRNA family" is most commonly used in titles of review articles related to miRNA. A quick search reveals "let-7 microRNA family" or "let-7 miRNA family" in frequent use, but nowhere "let-7 miRNA precursor family". WP:CONCISE suggests using the shorter "let-7 microRNA family". The one weakness of this argument according to wikipedia is consistency WP:CONSISTENT; many other miRNA articles on wikipedia are named with the format "Mir-### precursor family", with many instances of "Mir-###" and some "Mir-### precursor". In general, the naming scheme for miRNA articles is disorganized and I do not think it should be dispositive in this case. Jared BioE (talk) 03:52, 26 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
