Meaning of Tramping
[edit]The OED lists sacking as an Australian (not Australasian) meaning for "tramping" (and all their examples seem to be from Australia, not NZ), so I'll add a brief disclaimer. But it is a nice story. - Avenue 09:08, 3 November 2005 (UTC)
- It is a nice story but I have moved it here,
- When his appointment as head of the Office for National Statistics was announced, his hobbies were said to include "tramping". This caused much amusement in the Office, as it was understood that in New Zealand this can mean hiking or sacking staff. (The latter meaning is actually Australian and not New Zealand English.)
- because
- a) in truth, it is trivia with no bearing on Len Cook's life or his career and thus shouldn't really be in what we hope is (or will be) a high quality encyclopedia;
- b) it seems to be hearsay; see RachelBrown's comment [1] that it was "based in information from my spy in ONS!";
- c) and finally, it is unsourced and I cannot find any published source for this, i.e. it is not verifiable.
- I have replaced it with text about his hobbies (sourced from the press release about his appointment). If anyone is able to find a reliable, published source for this comment then please do put it back (plus a reference...). --Malcolmxl5 22:04, 20 June 2007 (UTC)
- To my knowledge tramping does not mean sacking staff in New Zealand. NealeFamily (talk) 02:37, 18 September 2014 (UTC)
