I hesitated to incorporporate some changes for fear of breaking a series of links. What I have to offer is out of the U.S. market's way of organizing this information. Here is what is currently on the disambiguation page:

  1. Lathe (tool), used in turning wood, metals and other materials.
  2. Lathe (metal), a specific form of lathe used specifically for turning metals.

Here is what I think should be on that page but it breaks some links I don't know how to fix yet.

  1. Lathe (turning machines), overview of turning machines.
  2. Lathe (woodworking machine tool), used in turning wood, some metals and other materials.
  3. Lathe (engine lathe), a specific form of lathe used specifically for turning metals and other materials.

There are many kinds of lathes. People who are looking for information on lathe could be looking for a few different things:

  • History of turning machines
  • An overall discussion of turning machines, those machines that grip a part and turn it so that a cutting tool may be brought to bear against the part.
  • A taxonomy of turning machines, vertical, horizontal, turret, threading, and many more taxonomic distinctions
  • Specifics on woodturning lathes, a machine tool
  • Specifics on metalturning lathes, a machine tool, this article should probable be titled "engine lathe" and linked off of the disambiguation page that way.

I find Lathe (woodworking machine tool) to be a little excessive. Lathe (woodworking) might be better. Similarly Lathe (engine lathe) doesn't mean anything to me, so even if it is the more technically correct description I think many would find it less informative than Lathe (metalworking) which might redirect to Engine lathe.
