Laouto vs laouta

[edit]

I think there is some confusion here between the laouto and the laouta (aka lavta). I am not an expert here, and am not sure how much variation there is, and thus where to say "usually" vs "generally" etc. and so will not make changes, but I hope someone with more expertise in Greek music can have a look at this.

In particular, I'm pretty sure the laouto doesn't have movable nylon (or gut) frets, but rather has fixed metal frets at western chromatic intervals. The laouta on the other hand has the moveable frets and (with its low tension nylon strings) more of an oud sound. I beleive the laouto (at least from what I've seen, again not sure how much variation exists) uses metal strings and thus sounds rather less oud-like. --Ericjs (talk) 15:15, 16 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
