Land acknowledgement is an element of Welcome to Country and not a separate activity. The connection to land involves culture, spirituality, language, law/lore, kin relationships and identity - this is from the "Welcome to Country" article. Whiteguru (talk) 22:58, 19 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Just a question here, is this merely to be seen as an Australian issue? Can't similar ceremonies and standards exist or be introduced in other countries with similar issues? It doesn't say in this (so far tiny) article that this is a mere Australian tradition. Thus, it may be better to keep it a separate article and possibly to widen it's scope, to include other similar traditions (under different names) in other countries.--Bemland (talk) 02:14, 30 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Its hard to see the relevance of other nations to the Welcome to Country we use in Australia; it is a Parliamentary mandate to use, and it reflects the traditions and law of the indigenous peoples of Australia. What goes on in other nations may not be relevant as this Welcome to Country directly references tribal elders and traditional owners - past, present and emerging. -- Whiteguru (talk) 07:24, 3 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

As Bemland points out, the merge proposal is based on the mistaken assumption that this is an exclusively Australian practice. I have expanded the article concerning other countries, and remove the merge tag. Regards, HaeB (talk) 08:35, 4 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Acknowledgement in Wikipedia articles

[edit]

When I write and edit history articles I always try to include whatever information I can find on Native history and populations since that's a frequently overlooked topic. I am wondering if there is an applicable Wikipedia guideline (not necessarily a rule) to help guide editors on getting the full picture, including Native history and things such as Native place names. I have my own process but I felt that looking at land acknowledgement practices might be a good place to start. Pingnova (talk) 17:58, 21 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Private Land Acknowledgements

[edit]

I am concerned that setting up land acknowledgments as "a formal statement that a public event is taking place on land originally inhabited by indigenous peoples" does not portray a complete picture. Land acknowledgements can be used in both public and private spaces.[1] That said, if this article was created to address only public land acknowledgements and national governments' use of them, the title of this article should probably reflect that scope. Completely agree. I've edited that sentence in the lead to say "a formal statement that acknowledges the original Indigenous Peoples of the land" to reflect the fact that land acknowledgments aren't just used for public events at this point. Editing the Article

[edit]

For my classes final, we have to edit a Wikipedia article and my group chose this article. We felt New Zealand should also have a mention, as well as, adding some sources to justify the edit and small edits to the Canada and United States sections.
