Wikileaks?

[edit]

Why isn't there a mention of the Wikileaks figures here? It seems to me that there was some vindication there. The number attributed to the coalition was 186,318 in the second Lancet survey. This is roughly comparable to the 109,032 that the War Logs tallied. The deaths in the logs are not "excess deaths," they're deaths recorded by coalition troops. In a lot of the commentary, people seem to conflate these studies with each other as if they measured the same things. But if you drill down into the numbers, you do see some correlation. Am I just not interpreting the numbers right? This hasn't seemed to get a lot of attention.FacelessMultitude (talk) 13:28, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

New study

[edit]

I haven't followed this controversy closely, but there's a new peer-reviewed study[1] that should probably be discussed in this article.--Victor Chmara (talk) 11:39, 16 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Pro-US bias

[edit]

If the Lancet had published a similar study of ISIS-caused deaths or deaths caused by any US enemy of the past (Pol-Pot, Saddam etc) no one would be so vigorously arguing whether or not it was true. People, in fact, require far less evidence than a peer reviewed Lancet Study to accept atrocities by such actors.

The media’s neglect of the Lancet's statistical studies has been proven to be particularly striking when contrasted with their regular citation of similar studies whose results do not reflect badly on U.S. military policy. It is the same method that was used to estimate that 200,000 have been killed in Sudan’s Darfur region (Science, 9/15/06). Yet, while the Darfur figure has been cited over 1,000 times by major U.S. press outlets just within the last year (e.g., AP, 12/6/07; New York Times, 12/6/07; Miami Herald, 12/5/07), the estimate for Iraq is ignored. The Darfur figure is considered so uncontroversial that a source for the number is almost never given. Often, it is not even called an estimate; for example, Associated Press reported (12/5/07), “More than 200,000 people have died.” In contrast, when the Johns Hopkins figure on Iraqi deaths is provided, it is accompanied by criticism or strong disclaimers. AnAssociated Press article (12/3/07) reported that Iraqi civilian deaths are “estimated at more than 75,000, with one controversial study last year contending there were as many as 655,000.” http://fair.org/extra-online-articles/a-million-iraqi-dead/ — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.144.253.190 (talk) 11:06, 5 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

So the question then, is, what steps should we take to rid ourselves of this bias and treat alleged atrocities and killings equally across the board. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.144.253.190 (talk) 05:42, 5 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
