Skating nationality?

[edit]

I'm not sure how the Skating Project handles skating nationality. In tennis, citizenship means nothing. Whatever tennis organization supports you is what you are regardless of where you were born. If you were born in London and play tennis for the US, you are a US tennis player. You could be classified as a UK-born American tennis player but you would not be a UK tennis player that currently represents the United States. the circumstances could vary of course depending on length of service to a country.... you might be a UK and American tennis player. Usually you would talk current representation with perhaps a separate sentence explaining the past. So and so is an American tennis player currently ranked 127 in the world. She was born in the UK and also represented the UK from 2010–2015. As I said, perhaps WikiProject Ice Skating has different rules for portraying skaters than other sports. The situation in figure skating is different, because in pairs and ice dance, the couple must choose which country to represent, so one partner may not be of the same nationality as the country for whom they skate. Take a look at Deanna Stellato-Dudek, for example. Until she was just recently granted Canadian citizenship, the lede read that she was "an American pair skater who currently competes with Maxime Deschamps for Canada". Joshua Santillan is "a retired American pair skater who represents Switzerland". Corey Circelli is a "a Canadian figure skater, who represents Italy". And so on. But only different sometimes. In tennis you also have Davis Cup, Billie Jean King Cup, United Cup, Olympics.... partners must also choose which tennis association they will represent, and the tennis association must agree. We also have in this case a skater who moved and lives in Colorado Springs, Colorado in the US. This person right now is a United States pair skater. They are also an Australian-born United States pairs skater. Right now they are a United States pairs skater who was born in Australia. They are a United States pairs skater and an Australian. One thing he is not right now is an Australian pairs skater, but he was in the recent past. He actually had to file and change his national affiliation to US, not just say it. He does not have to be a citizen to change his national affiliation except at the Olympics. The lead of Deanna Stellato-Dudek is extremely misleading to readers and it should say American-born Canadian pair skater. And how do you know Stellato doesn't have other citizenships, as many are easy to get? Are we going to put in the lead that Deanna Stellato-Dudek is an American-Canadian-UK-Grenadian-Antiguan pair skater just because of citizenship? She is a pair skater for whatever organization she is registered with. Fyunck(click) (talk) 19:59, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
You asked; I was just explaining the precedence that is used. These are biographies and not always exclusive to their skating careers. If someone wants to broach the subject at WikiProject Figure Skating, they are welcome to. Saying that Lachlan Lewer is American is incorrect. He is an Australian who competes for the United States. As for Deanna Stellato, I don't know whether she forfeited her U.S. citizenship when she was granted Canadian citizenship. That technicality would require the lede to be slightly re-worded. Understood. However we aren't saying he is American... we are saying he is a United States pairs skater or American pairs skater. That is quite true. And neither Canada nor the US require forfeiture of citizenship. I'm not up on WikiProject Skating guidelines, only WikiProject Tennis guidelines, so perhaps they are different than other sports and have different lead requirements. And you have two editors who disagree with you so please don't keep reverting. It looks like you already did it 6x. 20:12, 4 January 2025 (UTC)Fyunck(click) (talk)
