La Verkin or LaVerkin

[edit]

The name of this article is La Verkin, Utah. However, the local press lists the spelling as LaVerkin (see example), and it is spelled that way on the website of Washington County. It is also listed as LaVerkin in the Governmental Entities Search page of the Utah Department of Commerce, although in fairness it should be pointed out that the state seems to use both spellings. The city website also seems to support both spellings, although it uses LaVerkin in addresses.

On the other hand, the United States Post Office uses La Verkin (although LaVerkin seems to work and can be looked up in the ZIP Code database). The USGS Geographic Names Information System lists La Verkin, and only provides an alternate spelling for "La Verkin Canal" ("Laverkin Canal").

I suppose that the NGIS is an authority, but some deference might be given to local preference in the body of the article. Jim 17:09, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
