Explanation of Title
[edit]The title of “La Rabouilleuse” does indeed refer to Flore’s lowly origins and to the demeaning job she did, splashing about in streams and ponds to stir up crayfish for catching. In the novel, however, the meaning of the title goes much further, since she becomes the stirrer-up of trouble for other characters, agitating and unsettling them just as she once did the crayfish.
