Proposed article title change
[edit]Proposal: I propose the title be changed from "LGBT in the United States" to "LGBT people in the United States". Other potential titles could be "LGBT topics in the United States" or "LGBT Americans".
Reasoning: The initialism 'LGBT' is generally not used as a noun by itself on Wikipedia, but rather as an adjective. Written out fully the title would be "Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender in the United States" and I think most people would agree this wording sounds odd or unclear. Transgender is not really used as a noun on Wikipedia (e.g. "He is a transgender."), but rather an adjective (e.g. "He is a transgender man."). Perhaps the initialism could be interpreted as Lesbianism, Gayness, Bisexuality, and Transgenderism in the United States, but again this terminology sounds odd and doesn't match current usage in secondary sources or Wikipedia titles (e.g. "Transgenderism" redirects to the article "Transgender").
Other similar US topic articles like "Native Americans in the United States" use a noun like 'people' or 'Americans' (rather than just "Native in the United States" or "Indigenous in the United States"). Another article title example is "Black people in France" (not "Black in France" or "Blackness in France") and "African Americans" (not "African in the United States"). The article here centers on actual LGBT people living in the US and events around those people, and less about the discussion of concepts around sexuality and gender in the US.
I wanted to leave this open for awhile to seek consensus before any title change, though. Please feel free to disagree. Thank you in advance for discussing.
