  • "best friend" isn't really encyclopedic, I would imagine something like "close associate" would be far more appropriate.
  • Two sources, including one that mentions his mother, say that Lictor Hazael was the "best friend" of Juan Garcia Abrego. The issue here is that drug kingpins have many "associates", and I think there is a clear distinction between associate and friend in this case. Proceso magazine source reads: "Doña Evangelina García viuda de Marroquín, madre del que fue el mejor amigo de Juan, Líctor Hazael, afirma que siempre recuerda y recordará a García Abrego como un buen muchacho / English: "Doña Evangelina García, widow of Marroquín, mother of Juan's best friend, Líctor Hazael, affirms that she always remembers and will remember García Abrego as a good boy".
I've written multiple drug kingpin bios and this has been the only instance where I felt "best friend" was a fit, as sources confirmed he was not only a business partner when Juan Garcia Abrego was first starting, but his best friend as well. The book source provides a description of Juan Garcia Abrego's reserved personality and how he was very open to Lictor Hazael.
I'm convinced! The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 16:00, 16 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Link "kingpin"
  •  Fixed Linked to "crime boss"
  • "was indicted ... was indicted" is a bit repetitive.

  • Prose say c. 1942 infobox says 1942/1943. Be consistent.

  • This is basically an orphan article, is this guy really significant? Perhaps find some other articles from which he can be linked?
  • I refrained from writing this article for years because I wasn't sure he was notable for inclusion since I only had that Proceso source and the book. But when I found him in The Brownsville Herald archives, in a 1978 U.S. indictment (along with Juan Garcia Abrego), and in the Mexican print press, I determined he was notable. A lot of the figures he worked with are from the pre-Internet era so it's hard for anyone to write decent bios about them. I've linked him to Juan Garcia Abrego's page for now. He would definitely be linked to Saul Hernandez Rivera, another Gulf Cartel drug trafficker who was prominent in the 1980s (he is the eldest sibling of the brothers involved in the murder of Mark Kilroy). He is in my to-do list. Lictor Hazael will also likely be linked to Casimiro Espinosa Campos (alias "El Cacho"), the former leader of the Gulf Cartel prior to Juan Garcia Abrego, who controlled car theft activities in South Texas and northern Mexico up until his murder in 1984. Also in my to-do list.
  • "on 1942/1943" in, not on.
  •  Fixed
  • "another vehicle was stolen; Cotton, Bates and Gregory Nathan Fee stole" why do you need the first clause, why not just "On or around 11 October, Cotton, Bates, and Gregory Nathan Fee stole..."?
  •  Fixed
  • "J.A." these days we space those out "J. A."

  • As his birth date is uncertain, why are we so definitive on his death date when you have a footnote saying "Another source stated that he died on 22 August 1985.[4]"?
  • So the confusion happens because the only online source that mentions his death date cites 22 August 1985 (it is from 1996). However, I interviewed Lictor Hazael's family earlier this year (for a piece I wrote in Borderland Beat here) and was told he had died in May, not August. So I visited print archives in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, and found the obituary from the newspaper El Bravo as well as his death death certificate confirming it happened in May. I have copies of both and can send them to you. Since he is cited as dying in May, I prioritized this death date but kept the other as a footnote since it is easily available online. How would you recommend I fix this?
  • "p. 1-2." etc, should be pp. and en-dash, not hyphen.

That's all I have right now. On hold. The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 10:19, 14 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
