[edit]

The Vulcan Krewe, which I'd never heard of after living my whole life in New Orleans, is apparently a real group that celebrates some sort of a winter festival in a section of downtown St. Paul, MN. By their own admission [1], they seem to be utterly unknown just outside of that downtown area. There is no article in the Wikipedia and probably won't be under Wikipedia guidelines. I removed the reference. See fancruft, WP:STUPID Economy1 13:44, 5 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wild Chapatulas

[edit]

"Wild Chapatulas" is definitely the name of a band and of a song they recorded. It refers to a 'krewe,' but that krewe may be fictitious. It is implied that the Chapatulas are an Indian tribe--again evidently fictitious.

Cutest little thing I've ever seen/Mardi Gras Injun in the New Orlean'./She sewed all night, sewed all day:/Mardi Gras Mona went all the way.

I'm an Injun from the 13th ward;/I'm a big Kahuna, and I can't be bought./Walk through fire, swim through mud;/Snatch a feather from a eagle, drink panther blood. Etc.

There is a "Jaqimo fino" reference here too, for which see also "My Grandma and Your Grandma."

Needs to be beefed up

[edit]

This article is so sparse! I would like to see much more, such as the relation to social position and to race, as well as changes in these over the past century. 2A02:1210:2642:4A00:300B:83D8:AC57:44DB (talk) 19:21, 14 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

There are 5 Old Line Krewes Mystic Krewe of Comus, Twelth Night Revelers, Rex, Momus, and Proteus. Zulu is not one of them.
the Old Line Krewes we’re formed as exclusive organizations, and remain so. These days you need either a marriage certificate or a birth certificate to get in (they don’t really care about wealth. The numerous Krewes formed during the early decades of the 20th Century became larger and less rigid in membership(although all restricted to men or ladies. All segregated). The Krewe of Bacchus (1969) began the era of “Super Krewes” more and larger floats, more members (even those from out of town) and Celebrity monarchs. Following this model Endymion, then Orpheus. Unlike the traditional Krewes (ball are invite only - white tie), the big 3 have ball tickets available on line. Black tie. The balls have set-up ( soft drinks for cocktails- BYOB). It’s quite amusing to see men in tuxedos dragging ice chests of beer to a ball!!!! Some newer Krewes have turned coed and have desegregated ( usually due to low membership issues). Besides Zulu and NOMTAC, that parade, there are several black Socoiety balls (Original Illinois, Young Men Illinois, Beau Brummell and Bunch Club to name a few.)
