Questions about Incidence section
[edit]I'm a long-time fan of wikipedia, but new to editing pages.
I'd like to propose the "Incidence" section be modified. The 1/100,000 incidence estimate can be attributed to the book chapter by Wenger et al. ("Galactosylceramide lipidosis: globoid cell leukodystrophy (Krabbe disease)", in The metabolic and molecular bases of inherited disease, 8th Ed., 2001, Scriver, Beaudet, Sly, Valle, Eds.), but since the units of this estimate is not cases per person-years at risk, it can not be an incidence measure. The authors provide no indication as to how the 1/100,000 statistic was calculated, and furthermore, the lead author (DA Wenger) no longer describes this 1/100,000 estimate as "incidence" in his latest chapter on Krabbe disease ("Krabbe Disease (Globoid Cell Leukodystrophy)", in Leukodystrophies, 2011, Raymond, Eichler, Fatemi, Naidu, Eds.). I propose that this statistic be removed, and replaced with estimates of birth prevalence from some (or all) of 7 epidemiology papers whose bibliographic information I will provide below. The section header will need to be changed from "Incidence" to "Epidemiology." I propose a sentence along the lines of:
"The birth prevalence of Krabbe disease is estimated to be in the range between
0.29 to 1.35 per 100,000 births (refs)"
Poupetova, Ledvinova, Berna, et al. 2010. The birth prevalence of lysosomal storage disorders in the Czech Republic: comparison with data in different populations J Inherit Metab Dis 33(4): 387-396
Ozkara & Topcu 2004. Sphingolipidoses in Turkey Brain and Development 26(6): 363-366
Poorthuis, Wevers, Kleijer, et al. 1999. The frequency of lysosomal storage diseases in The Netherlands Hum Genet 105: 151-156
