Standing stone on hill above harbour

[edit]

When I visited Kopervik in 1976, I asked my cousins about the standing stone, similar to a menhir but thinner, standing above the harbour. Was it pagan in origin, I asked my cousins (who were devout Lutherans who insisted that "vikings were bad people, they moved away from here a long time ago"); they went vehemently "no, no, it's just a mark for sailors". Is that true, or what is its origin? is it an archaeological site and/or does it have a name?Skookum1 (talk) 16:10, 4 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sea serpent in "Kuebberveigen", c. 1850

[edit]

Years ago I came across a mention of a sea serpent that had beached on the isthmus at "Kuebberveigen" on the west coast of Norway, which I realized was (maybe) a Dano-Norwegian or Danish form of Kopervik; I think the year was 1850. People from around the island came to look at it as it decomposed, during which it stank of turpentine. The description given was similar to that of the Beast of Stronsa in Scotland (see www.geology.19thcenturyscience.org/.../1849-Lyell-TravelsNA2-I-0114.pdf this ref], among many), that is to say, one with a set of giraffe-like horns on a horse-type head, and very long body, a type known as the Norwegian sea serpent.. Anyone recognize this story or know more about it?Skookum1 (talk) 16:10, 4 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Isthmus

[edit]

I remember, and of course can see by looking at a map, that Kopervik straddles an isthmus that nearly splits the island in two; this could maybe be mentioned in the article, no?Skookum1 (talk) 16:10, 4 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
