Lands?

A good addition to this page might be all the lands that Kino travels through, both in the novels and the anime. --choi9999 14:22, 4 October 2006 (UTC)

Names

If I remember correctly, Kino's original name was never revealed in the anime, thus the statement that her original name was "Lily" is not necessarily true (though it is hinted at such). Also, I don't think "Sakura" really translates to "Lily" - lily in Japanese is yuri, not sakura (which in English would be the equivalent of "cherry blossom"). Because of this, I'm editing the names to their correct forms. (just a... heads up of sorts? if anyone wants to dispute this, step up.) 140.109.55.225 07:34, 19 August 2006 (UTC)ray=out

Persuaders

I don't really think that the 'persuader' is the correct name for Kino's revolver. In the novel, the term 'persuader' means any kind of firearms.

By the way, wasn't the automatic called the 'person of the forest' because the man, presumably the disciple of the Shishou, said so when he gave the pistol to Kino? That's what I remembered in the second book of the novel.

The explanation for how the Woodsman got its name can be found on p. 51 of the English translation of the first Kino no Tabi novel.--Choi9999 04:24, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

Could you please tell me which chapter? I don't have the English ver. cause I live in Korea. My claim is supported, by the way, with the Kind Land, second book, where an old man gives Kino the Woodsman(he actually calls it the Woodsman when he hands it to Kino)

Gakuen Kino

Alrighty, first time I've ever wrote in a talk page. hah

I'm not sure, but since Gakuen Kino retains the characters from Kino no Tabi and is (I'm pretty sure, anyway) by Keiichi Shigusawa, do you think that it deserves a mention?

I'm guessing this is a summary or review => [1]

I can't read japanese, hence I can't really write anything substantial about it. SleepyDoodler 00:52, 3 November 2006 (UTC)

To be honest, until you mentioned it, I had no idea Keiichi Shigusawa was coming out with Gakuen Kino! I dunno -- I can't read Japanese either. Until more information comes out, I say we wait. --Choi9999 03:12, 3 November 2006 (UTC)
Huh, it seems it's in the Japanese article under "学園キノ". Heh, we need someone who can read Japanese. Agreed, until we get more information, we wait.
--SleepyDoodler 04:47, 3 November 2006 (UTC)

I can't figure out where in the article to put this (the layout could use some reworking), but Gakuen Kino is a self-parody novel, originally serialized online, that spins off from the afterword to volume four. It has Kino as a magical girl... Doceirias 02:44, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

My copy of the novel will be arriving in the mail in a few weeks, I'll attempt to add an update then Eternal Sleeper 11:03, 14 March 2007
Keiichi Shigusawa said there was completely no relationship between "Kino no Tabi" and "Gakuen Kino". I've read the Chinese version of the novel and agree with that. Therefore I don't think a detailed introduction is needed.[[yeungchunk 02:40, 16 March 2007
A brief mention of it won't hurt. I think everyone already know that the two has no "direct" relationship, however, it's worth mentioning since it is a pardoy of it. Eternal Sleeper 20:42, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
It's covered pretty well on the list of episodes and novels page. Doceirias 20:58, 15 May 2007 (UTC)

What's the music from?

I have the english DVD that I checked out and on the special features page, the background song is nice, its not the opening/ending song. Is it an actual song? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 24.6.201.50 (talk) 00:58, 17 February 2007 (UTC).

Episode List

I added an episode list and summary for the anime. Just summaries I wrote off the top of my head after a viewing, feel free to change or remove if necessary. The titles are per the ADV DVD case.

-J

Hate to just undo your work like that, but that list already exists here: List of Kino's Journey episodes and books. Also, sign your posts with four ~/tildies, and put new posts at the bottom of the talk page. Doceirias 01:17, 18 May 2007 (UTC)

Translated Books

I was wondering if the names of the translated books and release dates were really necessary here in the main article. Can't someone just move them to the episodes article? 211.214.3.155 12:40, 26 May 2007 (UTC)

Even if the bulk of the content is on the other page, a minimum amount should be on this one. I think the Tokyopop chapter order could be on the other page, but the names of the books and release dates belong on the main page. After all, the page is technically supposed to be about the light novels first and the anime second. Doceirias 18:39, 26 May 2007 (UTC)

The Name "Kino"

I'm not sure about this, but is the name "Kino" dervired from the word "kinesis"(=movement)? Would make sense, because as a traveler Kino is of course always in motion.

Or is "Kino" simply a "normal" japanese name? (Or maybe both?)—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 84.139.52.65 (talkcontribs).

No, the name "Kino" is not normal Japanese name. According to the book "このライトノベル作家がすごい!"(ISBN 4796645578, p26), "Kino" is derived from the German word "kinematograph"(is abbreviated to "kino").--Swind 01:26, 29 May 2007 (UTC)
And since "Kinematograph" consists of "kinematos"(move) and "graphein"(draw) Kino's name derives from kinesis/kinematos, i see. Thanks a lot, seems my assumption was right after all. (I'm actually german and always wondered if that was just a mere coincidence.)
Almost all the names in the series are derived from German, to the extent that I have to assume Sigsawa studied the language at some point. Doceirias 17:41, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

Music?

I saw an opening on youtube and it looked like a Visual Novel version of Kino no Tabi. the song was Sekai wa Kagayaku, performed by Haruka Shimotsuki, how come this song isn't listed on the page? I have the full song and it came with Haruka Shimotsuki's Ashiato Rhythm album, Is the song for the anime or visual novel? is there a visual novel for kino no tabi and is the song actually performed by Haruka Shimotsuki?

Sir aaron sama girl 20:53, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

There are two visual novels (I've seen them called games at times). One of the two does use Haruka Shimotsuki's 'Sekai wa Kagayaku' though. [[Kidalana 12:48, 5 October 2007 (UTC)]]

Riku

I removed a comment from the article that speculated Riku as "maybe an Akita Inu". There is no place for guesswork, although if anyone has a source verifying his breed, that would be nice. In any case, while there certainly are white Akitas, and one could potentially be fluffy enough to look like Riku is depicted, it's a stretch. I always pictured him as a Samoyed, what with being big, white, fluffy, and having a curled tail and prominent grin and all. But there is no place for this in the article. Maurog 11:29, 15 August 2007 (UTC)

Reception

The reception section for the novels seems to consist of the frankly awful back cover quotes. The book was reviewed widely enough, and someone could dig up a better reception section in a few minutes. (Can't myself; conflict of interest.) Doceirias 23:23, 10 October 2007 (UTC)

Influences

Is this actually based on anything the author said? Or did someone just put down older works that are similar ideas? If people are just putting similar things down I might as well just add Marco Polo's biography and Italo Calvino's Invisible cities(which is probably the most comparable to Kino no Tabi). Though who knows what the author actually read and used as influences? Shouldn't the entire section just be scrapped as speculation? Patren 18:19, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

Certainly, it should be edited down to the one thing he actually said it was influenced by. He even flatly denies being influenced by the Little Prince, so why is it still in there? Doceirias 18:50, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

Novels

Can anyone confirm the existance of an English version of the novels? --RedWordSmith 03:40, 17 October 2005 (UTC)

Well, this confirms that Tokyopop has indeed aquired the rights to the novel, but that doesn't mean it's been released yet. --Aquillion 01:59, 22 October 2005 (UTC)
Oh, ok. Deals like this should, but don't always necessarily lead to a product that actually available, so I'm removing the bit about an English version for the time being. Probably just a misunderstanding. --RedWordSmith 02:08, 22 October 2005 (UTC)

Does Tokyopop seriously plan on releasing the fourth book in October of 2007 but the third a month after? --72.146.49.125 23:00, 30 March 2007 (UTC)

Actually, there is a novel. The first one is avaliable at Barnes and Nobles. It's called Kino's Journey -- Beautiful world. It's a rather short novel. 15 Feb 2008 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 4.254.96.51 (talk) 14:19, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

What model is Hermes?

I am wondering what real world motorcycle Hermes is based off of? It seems like a World war 2 model of some sort —Preceding unsigned comment added by Animematt (talkcontribs) 02:32, 26 December 2007 (UTC)

I remember someone saying that he was based off of a Brough Superior SS 100. +Kidalana (talk) 03:16, 9 January 2008 (UTC)
This is correct. It is definitely a Brough Superior SS 100. This is actually relevant because the Brough Superior SS 100 is one of the most rare and desirable of all "classic" motorcycles (in the real world). It's no surprise that original-Kino would want to fix one up and use it himself if he found one. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.118.203.149 (talk) 11:04, 27 January 2008 (UTC)

Protagonist gender

I haven't been able to figure it out for sure: is Kino female or male? --maru (talk) contribs 02:37, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

Same here. I've been watching a Hebrew-subbed version of the show, and they refer to Kino as male whenever there's a pronoun involved (does Japanese have gender-specific pronouns), but female whenever there's some other form of gender specific address, such as "little girl". I've assumed Kino is female, but the translator mistakenly assumed she was male (and retracted this assumption when clearly stated otherwise, as in the case of "little girl"), but I'm less than certain about this. 82.166.53.176 15:47, 19 June 2006 (UTC)
Well, Google sez female. And the storybook episode's Hebrew subs clearly referred to her as a scientist's daughter (in that brief "reality as an illusion" sequence). So there you have it, I guess. 82.166.53.176 15:50, 19 June 2006 (UTC)
I believe Japanese has gender-specific pronouns, yes. I myself am working off of English subtitled episodes, but I haven't gotten up to any "storybook episode" (I don't have that much time to watch...); I'll be sure to pay close attention to the English translation- Google has been known to be wrong. --maru (talk) contribs 20:02, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

The fourth episode, "Land of Adults", proves she is female, but this information could be considered a spoiler due to the partially intentional nature of Kino's androgynous...ness. (Well, it sounded intellegent up 'til then, eh?) In the Japanese version, she uses the male word for I, "boku" - although she referred to herself with the female form "(w)atashi"? when younger... 70.58.168.70 01:47, 7 July 2006 (UTC)

Kino is nefinately female. In the episode 'Land of the Adults', she sais herself that she is a girl. The primary reason she calls herself 'boku', the male form, is that the name Kino doesn't really fit with 'watashi', the female form.

I think that's slightly glib. She's female in terms of body, but whether she sees herself as male or female (or what) is i think kind of up for grabs. She exhibits a lot of "typical androgyne/transgender behavior" where she's uncomfortable with her given name (instead taking a different (male) name), dresses kind of as a boy, takes offense at being considered male AND a little while later (in a sort of "mirror image" scene) takes offense at being considered female, won't dance even when asked, etc. The big part here is in the first movie where she goes back and forth on "boku" and "watashi" as a pronoun, eventually settling on "boku" because it feels right. Now all of this has some alternate explanations, but that's not the sort of thing someone who is totally happy being a girl does. The show itself contributes to this, only indirectly revealing Kino's physical sex if i remember correctly. (The dub gives it away much earlier though, and generally is not half as subtle/careful about the topic as the original Japanese or the subtitles.) Anyway, this is all kind of a long way of saying: it's somewhat ambiguous. The fact that the show itself is so indirect about everything and that we're STILL arguing about gender ought to be a clue that this is a big deal... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.118.203.149 (talk) 10:58, 27 January 2008 (UTC)

Valid point, but I believe we are not only talking about the anime here. What you suggested as evidence of Kino hating her gender is pure conjecture. Neither the novels nor the anime mentions it explicitly, nor did I think Kino's actions were based on her hate for her gender. (I rather thought it was her identity that was giving her the trouble, not her gender) The novels are pretty straightforward in mentioning that Kino is a girl, and the new movie also makes it clear. Furthermore, psychological analysis of the main characters should be contained in some other section, and I believe we should maintain her physical gender, female, in the section. Come on, not all girls like dancing. 121.130.76.122 (talk) 05:54, 2 March 2008 (UTC)

PS2 games

I think that since the development of a psp title is mentioned, the two playstation 2 adaptions should be mentioned too.

Also, are the weapons names mentioned in this article translated from japanese or used as english words in the japanese original? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.152.128.33 (talk) 18:02, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

Depends on the name. Flute and Canon/Cannon are both katakana english names, but Woodsman is mori no hito. Doceirias (talk) 19:50, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

Are the PS2 games voice acted? Are the Best versions mere rereleases, or do they have added content? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 144.160.5.25 (talk) 20:37, 25 March 2008 (UTC)

As far as I can tell, the best versions are no different from the best versions released for North American titles after they have sold X amount of copies. On the Japanese wiki it say 同ソフトのベスト版発売 which means "same software, best edition sale". And yes, the games were voiced, which mainly used the same cast as with the anime.-- 21:48, 25 March 2008 (UTC)

ep nine -> reality?

thought someone should help expand on the "reality" (the bit where kino is in the hospital thingy with her dad) in ep 9, ive added what i can but im sure that theres more (and my english is bad too =[) —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 58.107.2.155 (talk) 12:09, August 23, 2007 (UTC)

PSP game

Anyone realize that the "announcement" of the PSP game is from the 2004 TGS, and since nothing more came to the surface, it is probably canceled? WP:CRYSTAL, people! 121.130.76.122 (talk) 02:29, 3 March 2008 (UTC)

Not a Crystal issue, though maybe badly worded. I've tagged it for being out of date. AnmaFinotera (talk) 03:10, 3 March 2008 (UTC)

Merge with Gakuen Kino

Considering the low level of information in Gakuen Kino, and the fact that it's merely a small spin-off series and 90% of the information on that page can be found already on this article, I propose a merger of the two.-- 09:50, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

Agreed! I was about to propose the same :) AnmaFinotera (talk) 10:02, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
Now that we have List of Kino's Journey light novels, we should probably merge it into that list.-- 04:20, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
That would work too, though the light novel list needs some massive clean up. What's in the Gakuen Kino article really isn't much except the plot, which can be used for the summary in the list. AnmaFinotera (talk) 04:24, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
Yes, I was planning on a complete redoing of the list with the {{Graphic novel list}} template. Should come out pretty smooth in the end.-- 04:30, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
Cool, I'll leave that up to you then :) AnmaFinotera (talk) 05:31, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

Studio Wombat?

While ANN has a page on Studio Wombat, and says that it's had a hand in Kino's Journey, I can not find any connection with this series in official source, such as MediaWorks' website, although the official website doesn't help at all. Not to mention that the IMDB listing of the company shows no mention of Kino. Instead, MW puts the animation company as A.C.G.T (アニメーション制作: A.C.G.T.), who also did the first movie. Also (and even though it's a wiki entry), if you go to the Japanese wiki page for A.C.G.T, you see that it's listed they did the Kino anime series. So, seeing as how it seems ANN is wrong in this instance, I am going to change it to ACGT for the anime studio.-- 03:36, 25 March 2008 (UTC)

The English Webpage

The splash page works, but none of the links work on it. What's the point in keeping it? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.55.215.155 (talk) 05:39, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

For some reason ADV changed the links, but didn't update the previous links to point to the new ones. I exchanged the link for one from the new URL which has working links for the other sections.-- 06:44, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

Title

Living in Japan, I have noticed that all official merchandise associated with the series uses the English title Kino's Travels. It is entirely possible that this use began after ADV had already decided upon an English title, but given the prevalence of "Kino's Travels" in Japan, it would probably be a good idea to at least mention it, even if we don't use it as the official title. —Julian Grybowski (talk) 03:42, 2 January 2009 (UTC)

I actually recommended that to Tokyopop for the novels, on the grounds that a journey ends and travels do not, but they were idiots and kept the title in Japanese. Doceirias (talk) 03:49, 2 January 2009 (UTC)
If there are no complaints, then, I think I might go ahead and have the page moved over then. Say, a couple of days for objections, then if no one says otherwise, just do it? —Julian Grybowski (talk) 04:39, 26 March 2009 (UTC)
Well, no. It's not the most commonly known official English title for the series/franchise. It would have to be rereleased in English under that title for it to be moved, per the Manual of Style naming conventions. Doceirias (talk) 06:05, 26 March 2009 (UTC)
