Ibn or bin?
[edit]Recently the article has been changed from Khalid ibn Abdullah to Khalid bin Abdullah and back again without discussion. I know that both terms mean "son of" in Arabic, so what is the difference? Are they just different romanisations of the same Arabic word? The article has been "ibn" for most of its existence, but the "bin" form seems to be more widely used. Actually for his horse racing interests (for which he is most well-known in the English-speaking world) he just uses "Khalid Abdullah". Can we sort things out on this talk page please. - Tigerboy, I reverted the title since it included the title of "Prince". The use of ibn instead of bin is completely due to practical reasons, since there is another article with the "bin" version. However, I do not have any objection of deleting ibn and using other alternatives if they would no contain "prince" like prefixes.Egeymi (talk) 09:06, 21 June 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for the explanation: you are absolutely correct to take "Prince" out of the page name. As I'm sure you have noticed the article is a bit of a mess at the in terms of names. In the title it's "ibn", but the infobox and lead use "bin", and throughout the article he's "Prince Khalid". I think the guideline here should be WP:COMMON NAME. I'll try to do some research on this and find the most commonly used name for this person. Tigerboy1966 10:34, 21 June 2013 (UTC)
- Is he not a prince then? He's sometimes referred to as "the Prince" here in the UK isn't he? I'm not saying he is or isn't, just curious as to what his status is. --Bcp67 (talk) 11:00, 21 June 2013 (UTC)
- I'm sure he is a Prince, but WP policy does not use royal titles in page names. That's why it's Elizabeth II, rather than Queen Elizabeth II. Tigerboy1966 12:31, 21 June 2013 (UTC)
- Or Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex....?? OK, fair enough - can understand the situation now, thanks. --Bcp67 (talk) 13:35, 21 June 2013 (UTC)

I was trying to clean up the article and some pages linking to him. Khalid bin Abdullah links to his father. Bin seems to the most common usage in English rather than ibn. Darwin-rover (talk) 17:45, 21 June 2013 (UTC) Actually ibn comes before the name, for example ibn Saud as you see it's written ibn. So bin uses after the name.George the writer (talk) 20:56, 21 June 2013 (UTC) the name has to be as Khalid bin Abdullah bin Abdul Rahman Al Saud, because there are more than one prince hold the name and I ask admin to move protecte the page.George the writer (talk) 21:09, 21 June 2013 (UTC)
Surprised there is not more made of the Jeremy Tree influence on this owner's bloodstock. Tree trained for Jock Whitney in England and that owner had a strong broodmare band, many of which found their way into Abdullah's hands on his death. (Victor Middlesex (talk) 03:17, 9 December 2014 (UTC)).
