I changed

to

On May 12, 2014, Kasem was granted temporary conservatorship of her father, over the objections of her stepmother Jean.

I can't really argue with that — you're absolutely technically correct. I feel the connotations of "stepmother" make the use of the word misleading in this context, but I'll certainly leave it be.
