Cut and paste moves
[edit]Several times individuals from evidently unassigned IPS have copied the contents of this page and pasted it elsewhere, specifically Kensington, Gauteng. This is what we call a "cut and paste move", and it is very undesirable because it splits the article's history, which is needed for attribution and is helpful in many other ways. The mechanism we use for renaming an article is to move it to a new name which both preserves the page's history and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. In most cases, contributors should be able to move an article themselves using the "Move" tab at the top of the page. If there is an article that you cannot move yourself by this process, follow the instructions at Wikipedia:Requested moves to request the move by another.
While I have attempted to address these concerns with the individual IP editors involved, here and here, my guess would be that because these IPs are not fixed identities, these are not being seen. I have instead posted a notice at this talk page and the talk page of the destination article, here. I have semi-protected the redirect page to prevent further unintentional GFDL violations. Please work with standard methods to address concerns about these articles. If you wish more information about this, feel free to address me at my talk page or to ask at Wikipedia's help desk, which is typically manned around the clock by volunteers. You are also free to discuss the proper home for this article, whether it should be located here or there, on this page. The article was recently moved to this location per request here. If this move was not uncontroversial and the article should be relocated to its original space, please feel free to indicate as much. Cut & paste moves without any explanation are not helpful in resolving potential conflicts.
Thank you. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 16:54, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
move/delete/copy
[edit]The article should be under "Kensington, Gauteng" as are all other suburbs in Johannesburg/Gauteng The "Kensington, Johannesburg" article has to be deleted and the "Kensington, Gauteng" article be the only one. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 41.243.201.245 (talk) 19:24, 11 June 2008 (UTC)
- Thank you for explaining your rationale. Since evidently the original page move was not uncontroversial and since it seems that precedent supports the original placement, I have restored the article to its original position. I will alert the editor who initially requested the move so that he or she can come to this article talk page to discuss the matter here in case consensus should develop for the move. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 19:32, 11 June 2008 (UTC)
