Clarification provided

[edit]

Milli Guvenlik Konseyi which ironically translates as The National Security Council of 1980 had nothing to do with the democratic organ of Milli Guvenlik Kurulu (the Board of National Security)that is the equivalent of a western democratic organ of The National Security Council. Because of this very close interchangable use of words, those two structures and their entirely different functions cause significant misunderstandings and misrepresentations. Please feel free to further edit my addition to further clarify its point. Thanks.

Dispute

[edit]

I will dispute this page, or at least would like to see some sources cited. The "many" executions mentioned are fewer than 60 and include people convicted of ordinary crimes (non-political murders) prior to the coup. The execution of a minor notwithstanding, the regime was careful not to execute anyone without at least a semi-plausible prosecution for murder. They did execute handful of well known monsterous butchers of both militant extreme right and extreme left. The kid in question, however, was convicted of killing a conscript soldier though he was just one of about two dozen suspects. (That the soldier was killed was not made-up, so this was not a political prosecution as the article implies. Whether or not they convicted the right militant and the age of the kid is the issue.)

I am not editing the page directly as I can only offer my memories (I lived through this period), but I also think the comparison to Pinochet is a gross distortion. Sure enough this was an anti-communist military regime but a relatively mild one compared to the one in Chile.

Dispute to dispute

[edit]

Better not edit the page. Maybe you did not know, thousands people were tortured, many killed, disappeared or left disabled. Yes it is very mild compared to Pinochet. Must be compared to Hitler. How lucky, I also lived through this period. And subjected torture by "relatively mild" one. Very mild fascists. Love you all.

Edited the article to be more neutral

[edit]

Thank you for the comments above. I tried to edit the article a bit to make it more neutral. I removed the comparison with Pinochet since it does not bring much more than hyperbole, even though it can be argued that both coups lead to executions and tortures, perhaps at a different scale. cihan 09:42, 17 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

very good boy Cihan

You just save your ass. He is not murderer at all. Evren is very nice monster as much as Hitler. Any way he saved us from Commies, long live USA!........ US rules. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 88.105.19.65 (talk) 23:15, 7 April 2007 (UTC).[reply]

85.96.5.88 18:51, 8 November 2005 (UTC) This article looks much more subjective when compared to an encylopedia because it mentions that Turkey would be much more harmed if the coup had not happened but this is nothing more than the author's personal view. According another person it may have put the country in a worser condition. It would be more objective if such mistakes are corrected considering that wikipedia is a widely used internet resource. I would strongly oppose being emotional when giving academic information. I also will not edit the page but I just wanted to remind the author[reply]

I just have say that Evren destroyed everything. He and people like him didn't let a socialist party to rule (I'm really far from being a socialist but still what he did was against the law). They smashed the trust for the Turkish soldier (nearly all of the Turkish traditions are set on being brave and noble, being a soldier), they vandalized the social structure, even they opened the gate for extreme religious groups. His movements made US and big bosses of the Turkish economy happy but the rest wasn't that much happy. Deliogul 20:43, 26 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Evren did NOT INSTALL himself to the presidential office. There was a Referandum.

[edit]

Evren and the other generals put 2 SEPERATE boxes when the public was voting for the constitution. One box was to voting for the change in the constitution, and the other one was for the decision of putting Evren into tehe presidential position.Public had the chance to not to vote for him, and decline this issue, therefore the word "installed" is not a correct explanation of the situation. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.108.218.149 (talk) 21:07, 6 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The referandum envelopes were nearly transparent, so you can leave yourself to the hands of mılıtary junta ıf you say no :). The democracy on ACTION. forget this article as it does not mention how many books were burned and discarded.

Clarification

[edit]

Can anyone make last sentence in article intelligible?

"Mor ve Ötesi's lead singer Harun Tekin criticized Evren for his judgement due to coup must be had before his death after sang their anti-coup song Darbe at the rock event Rock Tatili Foça." Tiddy (talk) 04:36, 15 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Mor ve Ötesi's (Purple and Beyond[?]) lead vocalist, Harun Tekin, criticized Evren for his actions during(?) the coup. This happened before the death of Evren, after they had performed their song, Darbe,(Darbe means 'hit'. 'Slings and arrows of outrageous fortune' sort of thing) (maybe they performed it for the first time?) at the Foça Rock Fest (a rock festival at the town of Foça, near Izmir, Turkey).

It seems to me that a well-intentioned Turkish editor wanted to edit the page, but language barriers barred him from doing the best job he could. 98.143.97.122 (talk) 20:16, 3 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Jokes about Kenan Evren

[edit]

I am told there were many jokes told about Evren during his Presidency. It would be a pity for them to be forgotten, as I think the one I heard was a good one (On a state visit to Moscow, he tells his wife "Get your swimming things, we're going to Swan Lake". At the ballet, having discovered his mistake he settles down in his seat and promptly falls asleep. At the end of the performance, his wife says to him, "These Russians are really considerate. Do you realize that while you were asleep they went on tiptoe to avoid disturbing you?"). Can anyone who knows more about this than I do shed some light on this topic for the article? Dated

[edit]

Well, he's been dead for a month, but apparently his "life sentence" is still under appeal. That's kind of sad, and also, I would suggest, now erroneous; he can no longer be sentenced to "life imprisonment", at least not in any way but the theorhetical sense. 2600:1004:B144:5853:AD78:66A8:F731:730A (talk) 01:39, 9 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Reads like propaganda

[edit]

there's some sections in here which are clear narrativising. Such as in the section on the coup:

"The chaotic situation created by far-left and far-right groups had destroyed public security in the country. Communist and neo-fascist groups tried to keep even the streets under their control, beating or killing anyone who was not one of them. Finally, an anti-secularist rally organised by Islamists in Konya on 6 September 1980 was the last straw."
