Genealogy web site
[edit]The term "original research" (OR) is used on Wikipedia to refer to material, such as facts, allegations, and ideas, without reliable, published sources. The source in question here is a website called Family Tree Legends, a genealogy program that allows users to submit their own information and information about their families. That's perfectly useful for genealogy enthusiasts, but it's not a published source. Now, the birthdate and middle name supplied by the genealogy program here might be accurate, but it's still not good enough as sourcing goes. Flyte35 (talk) 18:24, 7 November 2012 (UTC)
- i'm somewhat new to wikipedia so please forgive me but that website is used THROUGHOUT WIKIPEDIA as a reliable source and all dates of birth contained on there are 100% ACCURATE. i just want to know why you care so much and keep removing the accurate contribution (i.e. goff's dob) i added to the wikipedia article? please stop removing it and please get back to me, thanks. Bartholomew Bartolini (talk) 12:17, 8 November 2012 (UTC)
See above. Because it's original research. The fact that other people use it on Wikipedia doesn't mean it's an appropriate source, for the reasons I've explained above. I would remove something that cited a user-based genealogy program if I saw it on other pages as well (though I haven't). That's why I keep removing it. That's why I will continue to remove it until there's a reliable, published source. "Verifiability, not truth" is one of Wikipedia's core sourcing policies. Verifiability is a minimum requirement for inclusion of material.Flyte35 (talk) 13:33, 8 November 2012 (UTC)
