Destroyed species

[edit]

Thank for the citation, but it doesn't seem to indicate what you assert. Can you specifically reference the document which claims that any specific species were destroyed? If by "destroyed" you mean a single death of a single member of a species, or of a small group of that species, I think we need to find a more appropriate word. Maybe "disturbed"? "Displaced"? --JereKrischel 04:13, 4 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The citation I gave you deals with destruction of "archeological" resources. I admit itʻs not the best source, as the Museum came under serious scrutiny when they fired the project historian, Barry Nakamura[1], in 1992 in an effort to cover up the much GREATER impact of the project on religious sites, but it shows enough impact in this area to get the point across. Some of the species which were driven to probable extinction (no sightings since construction despite efforts to locate them) are the Oʻahu ʻAlauahiho (Paroreomyza maculata[2])and a variety of Kahuli (Native tree snail, Achatinella sp.). There are also LOTS of endangered species declining rapidly in the impacted area as we speak[3] [4][5][6], as a direct result of the freeway. The mess this project made (you know it was exempted from all environmental impact laws singlehandedly by Dan Inouye, or it never could have been built; the aforementioned snail stopped the project for years until Dan The Man pulled that coup by tacking the project on to a hard-to-reject congressional Defense bill).
There are ukupaila academic references not online too, but lemme tell you, none of them even scrape the surface of how bad it really is. Next time you come home send me a message (way ahead of time) and if time permits I can show you what I mean. That goes for any of yʻall reading this. Itʻs a little hard to grasp the destruction that freeway did unless you walk under it with your own feet. Laualoha 06:45, 4 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Very useful details. I'll try and work them into the article - they're definitely worth citing. I'll be back in town around christmas 2006, I would be honored if you would show me first hand. Send me an email at jere@krischel.org, and I'll let you know as soon as my travel plans are solid. --JereKrischel 07:03, 4 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
