Date of birth?

[edit]

I undid an uncited edit under Personal Life that stated she was born in 1978 as Joyce Houseknecht. This conflicts with the stated date of birth being in 1985.

However some research shows that according to her official biography she won the Miss New Jersey Teen USA pageant, which Joyce Houseknecht won in 1995, and according to the list in Wikipedia a winner by the name of Katrina Law is not listed, so presumably her name has changed. A birth year of 1978 would be appropriate for a 1995 winner. However, I have not been able to find any reliable citation as to a proper birth date. I just saw this too. If we don't have a citation for something we have to take the year out. In 1995 she would have been 10 and thus not a teenager yet. I say keep the year out. 161.185.161.76 (talk) 20:13, 7 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It's a shame there's no reliable source for the date of birth of this person yet :( Xboxsponge15 (talk) 11:28, 19 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
How odd -these pages show her name as Joyce Houseknecht
https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Miss_New_Jersey_Teen_USA
https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Miss_Teen_USA_1995
https://missnewjerseyusa.com/halloffame-teen/
But her bio page does not include this - why?
Is "Katrina" lying about her age when she says she was born in 1985? 198.251.56.38 (talk) 21:26, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
None of those are reliable sources. Especially the former two as they're just other Wikipedia pages.
And where exactly did she herself say that she was born in 1985? Did she actually claim that was the year she was born? Lots of people put false DOBs online and then many other sites web scrape that info with no regard to the reliability or accuracy. This is one of the reasons Wikipedia doesn't accept very many sites that list a DOB. In fact, some celebs chose to keep their ages private. Kcj5062 (talk) 02:28, 14 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The video of the delegate introduction of Miss Teen USA 1995 is available on YouTube. Joyce Houseknecht is at the 3:19 mark at the following link,[1] who looks a lot like Katrina. That being said, delegates are required to be between the ages of 14 and 19 in order to compete, putting her birth year somewhere between 1976 and 1981 (give or take). What we're discussing amounts to original research, which is a violation of Wikipedia policy. Until such time that there is a reliable third party source on the matter, this content will need to be removed. Regards, Yamaguchi先生 21:03, 11 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Follow-up

[edit]

More evidence that that Joyce Houseknecht = Katrina Law can be found in this Facebook photo (Joyce Houseknecht, Miss New Jersey Teen USA is fourth from the left, and it's definitely plausible that that's a young Katrina Law). But I've removed the year that Law purportedly won Miss New Jersey Teen USA title as it's not in the accompanying reference. The issue right now is I don't think there's any reliable sourcing that Katrina Law is a "stage name" for Joyce Houseknecht, nor that Law won the pageant in 1995, so I agree with Yamaguchi that we're "stuck" right now on including any of this info, including the Date of Birth... — Preceding unsigned comment added by IJBall (talkcontribs) 00:17, November 28, 2015‎ (UTC)

One more interesting tidbit: The New York Times claims that Joyce Houseknecht was in 1987's An Autumn's Tale,[2] which was filmed in NYC, but this is not verified at either the IMDb page for the movie, nor the Wikipedia article. --IJBall (contribstalk) 00:30, 28 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

You provided evidence that she was indeed Miss Teen NJ in 1995 and yet you removed it from her article? (the year)..Her actual d.o.b is September 30th, 1977 btw..it was added once a few years back but removed..probably her agent told her to remove it ...--Stemoc 04:01, 28 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I removed it because the sourcing provided in the article doesn't give the year that she won the pageant. And the "evidence" I've provided here is circumstantial at best. Until someone can get sourcing that establishes that "Katrina Law" is a stage name for Joyce Houseknecht, there's not a whole lot we on Wikipedia can do here. Ditto for the birthdate – while I personally have no doubt the 1977 DOB is correct, there's noting verifiable that establishes that it's actually Law's DOB. And under WP:BLPPRIVACY it means we have to leave it out... --IJBall (contribstalk) 05:33, 28 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Check out this § Workflow section (revision). To put it bluntly, to get rid of whatever source-less birthday is mentioned on Wikidata, they require us to provide a reliable source 'proving' the birthday is "unknown". What a total joke. --77.173.90.33 (talk) 22:59, 18 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It's tricky. Here's another bit of circumstantial evidence. Joyce Houseknecht, 21, of Deptford, theatre major, blows a kiss to friends and family during Friday, May 14, 1999 Stockton's Spring graduation.[3] ghouston (talk) 05:23, 19 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • It's photo 54 out of 59 if the selector doesn't work. As circumstantial evidence it's not bad, because we have a) German surname b) same town c) same college d) same major e) also listed elsewhere as a winner of Miss Teen New Jersey f) resemblance in the photo. ghouston (talk) 05:37, 19 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

This likely won't be considered a reliable source by Wikipedia standards, but her high school yearbook is up on classmates.com and she's listed as a senior in 1995 of Deptford Township High School. At the time she was going by her birth name Joyce Houseknect.

https://www.classmates.com/siteui/yearbooks/1000245847?page=139&searchTerm=joyce

So I think it's safe to say that the 1985 birth year that a lot of sites have listed isn't the correct one.Kcj5062 (talk) 07:46, 15 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Correct. But it's also correct to say we can't do much until a WP:RS confirms that Katrina Law and Joyce Houseknect are actually the same person. --IJBall (contribstalk) 14:29, 15 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Personal Life

[edit]

The first section reads "Law's mother is Taiwanese and her Law worked alongside director Adrian Picardi with producers Eric Ro and Don Le, to create a low budget web series called The Resistance.[1]"

Is this a typo? Law's mother is Taiwanese and her Law worked... This doesn't seem to make sense to me. Maybe I'm brain farting right now, but it seems that the first sentence was accidentally cut off by the second sentence which starts with "Law worked alongside director..." Opening Paragraph

[edit]

The opening paragraph also doesn't seem to make sense. It currently reads "Katrina Law is an American actress. (a slave in the house of Batiatus) in the Starz television series..."

I believe the period should be replaced by a comma. Also, the parentheses should probably be removed and read something like this: "Katrina Law is an American actress, known for her role as Mira, a slave in the house of Batiatus, in the Starz television series Spartacus: Blood and Sand and Spartacus: Vengeance." Reference date formats

[edit]

This article has had a {{Use dmy dates}} reference tag since October 2011. A {{Use mdy dates}} was subsequently added in April 2014. As the subject of this article in indisputably an American actress, under MOS:DATETIES this article should use 'mdy dates'. Therefore, I am going to go ahead and remove the older 'Use dmy dates' tag, and switch all reference 'date' parameters to 'mdy dates' format. --IJBall (contribstalk) 14:21, 30 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

An Autumn's Tale

[edit]

Just another source for her appearance in An Autumn's Tale, an AMA on Reddit: Q. As a child, you played a minor role in Mabel Cheung’s An Autumn’s Tale, a great movie, btw (review forthcoming). How did you audition for the role, and can you share any memories you have of it, working with Mabel, Alex, Chow Yun Fat, Cherie Chung? A. I remember not really knowing what was happening because I was so young but I do remember they dubbed my voice and that was a surprise!

She is also listed as a cast member on IMBD, but that admittedly doesn't prove much. ghouston (talk) 12:07, 2 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

None of those are reliable sources, unfortunately – I don't think even the Reddit AMA can be used (though that may be an exception under WP:ABOUTSELF – it might be worth asking about this at WP:RSN... but even there, she only says she was "in it", not that she was credited as "Joyce Houseknecht"). As I say up-page, the issue here is that there is no reliable source that states that Katrina Law and Joyce Houseknecht are the same person. There are photos that confirm that that is almost certainly the case, but the problem is that is WP:OR. Until there's profile of Law that talks about her beauty pageant days as Joyce Houseknecht, we are stuck and cannot include any of that in the article. --IJBall (contribstalk) 15:15, 2 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
