Controversy - Katie Porter attempts to discredit Riley Gaines

[edit]

Katie Porter refused to voice support for protecting spaces for biological women on the Real Time with Bill Maher. In addition, Katie used her larger platform to attempt to discredit Riley Gaines who is speaking on behalf of biological women in women’s sports. Katie is a former collegiate athlete who was forced to compete against a 6’3” trans woman (born male who went through puberty) who has a clear physiological advantage. In this exchange, two men (born as and identify as men) had to push back on Katie’s narrative when she attempted to discredit Riley by erroneously claiming Riley was looking for “likes and clicks.” 98.176.184.63 (talk) 16:16, 19 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The page is about what Porter has said and done, now what she hasn't done, and "refused to voice support" is not neutral language. If there's secondary sources that reported the discussion on Maher's show, what she said/did might be worthy of inclusion, but otherwise it's just trivia. You say "Katie is a former collegiate athlete" and if we can source that, that would be more helpful to add to the biography than a non-notable talk show appearance. Please replace reference #1

[edit]

As I type this, the first reference is from a site called wagpolitics, and the linked article is of very low journalistic quality—this is a call out to anyone with time to please replace it with something more formal. 2001:5A8:646:2100:FC65:51DA:63E3:D28C (talk) 04:22, 25 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Done. Thanks for pointing this out. Marquardtika (talk) 16:01, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Los Angels Times article on her personal life

[edit]

This boyfriend is not mentioned in the section on her personal life, and it's my understanding that this kind of thing is considered notable and relevant. Would it be a good idea to add this to the article?

This is my proposal for adding to the article:

In November 2024, Porter obtained a restraining order against her ex-boyfriend, whom she had kicked out of her home in August 2024, and who had "a history of abusing prescription painkillers and other drugs," and had been previously arrested in 2021 for participating in a fight at a Porter town hall at a park in Irvine.[1]

Great! Someone else added this in their own wording. Thanks a lot! The Last Hungry Cat (talk) 16:33, 8 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
