In short biographies published by Rashtrothaan Sahitya, Bengaluru, Sri Gundaal Mahabala Shetty, Author, brings out a brief account of the life of Sri Sadashiva Rao Karnad. He was a left handed cricketer; obtained deeksha from Mahatma Gandhi on 20/08/1920; emulated Bardoli Movement in Siddapur in 1922: lost his wife in 1923;voted in favour of Belgaum Congress Session in place of Mangalore; died in Mumbai's Harikishan Das Hospital on 09/01/1937. His mother died a year later. He chanted the sanskrit prayer/shloka "na twaham kaamye rajyam na swargam punarbhavam, kaamye dukhatptaanaam praanam aartinaashanam" every day. It literally (loosely) translates to - I do not aspire for kingdom nor for heaven. enough if I can serve those boiling in sorrows and liberate them from their troubles.
Mahatma Gandhi met his mother after his death and remarked - You are blessed to have borne such a son.
