For "Werner":

  • The official California prisoner locater (see link in article)
  • His girlfriend's article in the Sunnyvale Sun newspaper (see link in article)
  • "Knife Murders: San Jose Student Held in Slaying Of Three Girls," by Paul Avery (San Francisco Chronicle, 4-30-1971, pp. 1, 28)
  • Fitchburg Sentinel (1971-04-30) lists him as Werner too.
  • Star News (1971-04-30), page 35 (A.P.)
  • Oakland Tribune (1971-04-29)
  • Lawrence Journal-World (21 Oct 1971) (see link in article)

For "Warner":

  • Michael Newton, An Encyclopedia of Modern Serial Killers. This wasn't cited in the article but was an obvious source, and unfortunately it became the title of the article.Tkotc (talk) 05:37, 12 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
To clarify, just my guess that a typo or proofreading error in Newton could have been the ultimate source of this confusion.216.165.224.81 (talk) 05:51, 12 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

While fixing a minor typo (locator, not "locater"), I checked CDCR's inmate locator to verify if Warner (Werner?) is still in CMF. Checking both spellings, no such inmate could be found. Did he die in prison? They seem to be pretty good at removing deceased prisoners from the locator---I tested with the recently-deceased Charles Manson, and he's no longer listed. I recently came across an obituary for him (same birth date, name), but could not find any corroborating news sources. I also did an inmate locator search and found him to be missing. I didn't want to update the article, however, since I'm unsure about the credibility of the obit. TrueCrimeData (talk) 21:51, 2 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
