Suggested changes

[edit]

I just interviewed a local in Karamea who'd read the Wikipedia article and had the following suggestions:

  • Good to see the alternative red ochre name being mentioned
  • Since the report to the Regional Council a new channel was excavated for the river directly across from where it enters the estuary: this took three tries, and the river only burst through the on the third go
  • Significant increase in population since last census, mostly retirees from elsewhere cashing in and buying up locally - no source for this bit
  • Sphagnum moss is no longer harvested here, or indeed anywhere much on the Coast
  • The company that was making fine furniture has left
  • No real fishing industry except whitebaiting
  • Tomatillos, passionfruit, feijoas, tomatoes the major horticulture (have asked for photos —MD)
  • Worth mentioning in the aerodrome article the helocopter service used by DOC and transporting hikers/bikers
  • Mountain biking needs mentioning as a major recreational activity (esp since Heaphy Track opened for bikes —MD)
  • Clean Stream Karamea initiative using locally propagated native plants
  • Karamea Area School now has new buildings, just opened
  • Should be some mention of the significant number of off-the-grid lifestyle blocks
  • The estuary has now all been deemed a significant wetland, see Regional Council report of 2020 or 2021

He's also supplied a 2007 Karamea Community Profile, which has some useful background on the area. —Giantflightlessbirds (talk) 07:38, 24 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
