Ted Simon's first contact with African Continent is at Maghreb. Given the world situation at the time of the trip, the tension between these governments and citizens Western were obvious. Ted Simon gets arrested on two seperate occasions (once in Tunisia and again in Egypt) as the local police forces think he might be a spy. In Egypt, Ted Simon travels a few miles of the journey by train, for fear of the army trying limit the free movement of traffic. His journey in Africa continues via the Trans-African_Highway_network. First to Cairo following the Cairo–Dakar_Highway and then South by the Cairo – Cape Town Highway. These are the countries that he travels through in this chapter:
- Falling And Rising
This chapter begins halfway between Atbara and Kassala in Sudan. Due to the heat and the use of gears, the evaporation of fuel forces Ted Simon to return to Atbara. He suffers many falls due to the difficult terrain and ends up taking 5 days to travel 300km.
