update

[edit]

Five years ago in the AFD, people were saying this was a common name for USB flash drives, but I can't confirm this any more, a Google search often seems to bring up some random board game, too.

All-time monthly page view statistics show that we shed some 4k views/month here, which were probably meant for the hyperspace topic, such as it were.

In the last six months, the identifiable clickstreams for the hatnote were:

clickstream-enwiki-2024-02.tsv:
  • USB_flash_drive Hyperspace link 36
clickstream-enwiki-2024-03.tsv:
  • USB_flash_drive Hyperspace link 31
clickstream-enwiki-2024-04.tsv:
  • USB_flash_drive Hyperspace link 37
clickstream-enwiki-2024-05.tsv:
  • USB_flash_drive Hyperspace link 39
clickstream-enwiki-2024-06.tsv:
  • USB_flash_drive Hyperspace link 24
clickstream-enwiki-2024-07.tsv:
  • USB_flash_drive Hyperspace link 24

These numbers are awfully close to the traffic for the redirect - about 50 a month, and at <50 we're close to the clickstream anonymization threshold so some of the above could be incomplete, too (so it could be even closer to total traffic).

So I disambiguated it over here instead now. Very few readers will be affected in case of a problem, and having it as a clear choice will allow us to at least measure if a primary redirect to USB flash drive was still warranted.

Google Books Ngrams don't show "jump drive" to be a particularly common a term, either. --Joy (talk) 19:51, 22 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

BTW very similar story at hyperjump. --Joy (talk) 19:31, 2 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

WikiNav for Jump drive bears this out: in September, 34 to hyper drive, 21 to flash drive, 28 filtered. --Joy (talk) 20:53, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
