Not a crossdresser?

[edit]

From the article "He wore shocking make-up, although he did not fall into the categories of cross dresser, transvestite or female impersonator."

I'm not sure this is accurate. It's personal preference to some degree, but I'd definately classify Clary's style as crossdresser/transvestite. Any opinions on this?

  • There is a difference between Clary's style and that of a transvestite. Much the same in that there is a difference between drag queens and transvestites. A transvestite will wear womens clothing in order to pass himself off as female and will adopt as convincing an appearance of a woman as possible. Clary never tried to pass himself off as a woman, and his outfits were not things that women would really wear (with the exception of the occasional feather boa). Yes, they were hugely camp and outrageous, but not really something you would see women wearing. The make-up he used to wear was certainly "draggy", but let us remember that many male pop stars used to wear make-up during the New Romantic era of the early 80s (Duran, Steve Strange, Marc Almond, etc), and you wouldn't really consider them to be transvestites or drag queens - regardless of their sexuality. Personally, I'd say that Clary's outfits (certainly in the late 80s/early 90s) were somewhere between 1970s Glam Rock, Fetish, and Drag Cabaret.MassassiUK 23:56, 31 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Eddie Izzard is commonly referred to as a transvestite, but he doesn't try to pass himself off as a woman. Just saying. --FormerIP (talk) 19:05, 21 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Roman Catholic

[edit]

I've removed the Roman Catholic category from the article as it doesn't quite fit in with WP:BLP policy, which states that:

Category tags regarding religious beliefs should not be used unless two criteria are met:

1) The subject publicly self-identifies with the belief in question;

2) The subject's beliefs are relevant to the subject's notable activities or public life, according to reliable published sources.

Although Clary went to a Catholic school, I am not actually sure if he "identifies" as Catholic, but (most importantly) his religious beliefs (if any) are not relevant to his public life or activities. However, if anybody has evidence to the contrary, then please add the information back (citing sources). MassassiUK 08:48, 21 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Attempted abduction

[edit]

Something should be said about the attempted abduction of Clary in 2006. I've been searching around the internet for about 30 minutes though for some referecnces and can't find any, so it's a bit weird, but it was front page news at the time. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.3.145.0 (talk) 19:42, 31 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Doctor of Civil Law

[edit]

He mentioned on Radio 4 game show that he's a Doctor of Civil Law, and this does indeed seem to be the case, e.g. http://www.edp24.co.uk/home/photo_gallery_comedian_julian_clary_among_those_receiving_degrees_from_university_of_east_anglia_1_3695709 94.15.137.6 (talk) 19:37, 12 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
