[edit]The story about Slade shooting off Jules fingers one at a time and then keeping his ears is from Roughing It by Mark Twain. If I knew how to do a cite right I'd put it in myself, but I don't 71.237.165.253 (talk) 19:07, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
- Well, this is low importance, but I had the time. I looked up Roughing It and MTwain.com has it online. The detail is found in Chapter X. The relevant sections start in paragraph 4. I found some key differences between the WP article and Twain's story as published. Specifically, Twain recounts,
- Slade gets ambushed in Julesburg by Jules, but both parties shoot each other and convalesce, with Jules recovering first and beating a hasty retreat to a place called Rocky Ridge.
- Slade, after doing so well in Julesburg, is moved to another trouble spot on the Overland, Rocky Ridge. Slade eventually catches Jules, has him tied to a post, and then lets him sit there overnight in the cold.
- Once Slade starts his day, he uses Jules for a target, killed him then removed his ears for trophies, but may not have shot off every finger. Says Twain of the final execution,
- Slade practised on him with his revolver, nipping the flesh here and there, and occasionally clipping off a finger, while Jules begged him to kill him outright and put him out of his misery. Finally Slade reloaded, and walking up close to his victim, made some characteristic remarks and then dispatched him. The body lay there half a day, nobody venturing to touch it without orders, and then Slade detailed a party and assisted at the burial himself. But he first cut off the dead man's ears and put them in his vest pocket, where he carried them for some time with great satisfaction.
- That's as far as I got with the research. I don't have anything else, or any place to put this other than here. If someone else can take over... ? Srwalden (talk) 23:31, 26 May 2011 (UTC)
