Converso Origin?

[edit]

None of the articles in other languages mention that his family was of Jewish converso origin. Can the originator of this statement provide the sourse of such information. Thank you. Anchorite 13:33, 31 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I couldn't find anything of substance, but my guess is that they are going on the strength of the surname. AllenHansen (talk) 02:43, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nationality

[edit]

So, he was "Italian", despite being "son of the Spanish Consul", being born in a territory that was dinastically linked to Spain, and joined the Russian court "as a member of the Spanish Nobility". Not even taking into account him being named José de Ribas, a name that any spaniard or italian would agree is spanish... y'know, because he was born in a Spanish family and educated as a Spaniard... — Preceding unsigned comment added by WilliamDracul88 (talkcontribs) 18:45, 24 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

His name was Josep de Ribas. He had a Catalan surname. His father was from Barcelona. He didn't have any Spanish ancestor (at least not in a direct way). --83.61.136.45 (talk) 15:06, 27 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Well, the guy was born in Italy and never lived in Spain. Breizhcatalonia1993 (talk) 01:18, 3 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Founder of Odessa? Hardly

[edit]

To suggest that de Ribas founded Odessa, as claimed by an apparent descendant, is wishful nonsense. The foundation was by the Tsaritsa herself and it was based on the successful international trading post that was already there on Russian-controlled territory.--Po Mieczu (talk) 19:19, 3 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Wasn't he involved in some way? Breizhcatalonia1993 (talk) 01:19, 3 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Language change

[edit]

As he was of Catalan origin, politics a part, the title in the article should be his name in Catalan. Also keep in mind that virtually nobody spoke Spanish when his father was born in Catalonia. Breizhcatalonia1993 (talk) 01:21, 3 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
