Inside Panama, Illueca is known for being part of the Torrijos and Noriega dictatorship (1968-1989). He was part of puppet governments when he was appointed vice president in 1982 (no elections were held), and then took over as president as De La Espriella stepped down. He continued to participate of the corrupt and violent repressive Noriega dictatorship of the 1980s, and was the sitting "puppet" president in 1984 when sham elections were held with a fradulent result keeping the dictatorship's candidate in the presidency of Panama. Lately, he has opposed the nation's efforts to expand the Panama Canal, ignoring his dubious past as a corrupt, appointed president. Biruitorul 23:43, 11 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
