Problems with the text of the article

[edit]

I feel that the part about it being clear that Jor-El is not really a bad guy in Smallville after season 4 isn't true, as who is making this distinction between what is clear in "Smallville" and what is not? Also, that part about what he meant by "your destiny" doesn't really make sense in the article.—Preceding unsigned comment added by Luvtheheaven (talkcontribs) 15:33, February 19, 2006

The image you show of Jor-El is credited to Superman co-creator Joe Shuster. It is not drawn by him bbut by long-running Superman ghost, Wayne Boring. Check with DC if you doubt this, of course. Wayne worked on Superman from approx 1941 to mid-1960s. Thank you. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.75.175.200 (talkcontribs) 12:24, July 1, 2006

Jor-El in the comic books first in More Fun#101

[edit]

He first appeared in comic books in More Fun#101 (with that spelling of the name, not Jor-L.)—Preceding unsigned comment added by Enda80 (talkcontribs) 15:51, March 15, 2006

In More Fun Comics#101, Jor-El and Lara are first clearly seen and referred to by name in the magazines.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.147.140.206 (talkcontribs) 05:31, August 10, 2005

Jor-El first appeared in the Superman newspaper comic strip in 1939, though under the name "Jor-L"; the spelling "Jor-El" first appeared in comics in "More Fun" #101. Also, you can sign your name by adding 4 "~" symbols to the end of your text. Anthony Dean 01:51, 23 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

George Lazeby played an imposter

[edit]

Lazenby actually plays an imposter, the character was not really diagetically Jor-El.—Preceding unsigned comment added by Enda80 (talkcontribs) 15:52, March 15, 2006

Merger?

[edit]

There has been a merge tag on Jor-El (kryptonian) for a long time. It appears to me that the two pages are to the same subject, but I don't know enough to know where the material there should fit in this page. Could someone do the merger please, or if it isn't appropriate, remove the tags. Kcordina Talk 15:24, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Most of the information on the Jor-El (kryptonian) page is already included in this article, and is largely copied-and-pasted from this page ([1]). Will merge the two pages together (under Jor-El) and use some of the info given on the original website's page. Anthony Dean 01:51, 23 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sentence fragment

[edit]

The following sentence fragment has been removed from the introduction: In most versions of the Superman story (with the notable exceptions of Superman: The Movie and the indirect sequel, Superman Returns. There's nothing to indicate what point was being made by this, so I've removed it. 23skidoo 14:32, 16 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Doomed.jpg

[edit]

Image:Doomed.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 01:19, 3 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Smallville section

[edit]

There is far too much plot information in the Smallville section. I've provide a link to the character's section in Characters of Smallville, which summarizes (succinctly) Jor-El's overall actions on the show. The only important things to mention on this page would be the real world information (i.e. who portrays him) and a brief summary of what the character does on the show. We don't need a episode-by-episode recap of everything he does. Readers can watch the show if they wish to know details about the character, or read the Characters of Smallville page, or even the season pages where the individual episodes are summarized.  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 13:41, 22 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

How about if the details are in a separate article?Vchimpanzee · talk · contributions · 22:05, 8 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see Jor-El anywhere in Characters of Smallville, Characters of Smallville. Maybe I'm just tired.Vchimpanzee · talk · contributions · 22:07, 8 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There isn't a section in Characters of Smallville (anymore), because there is no real world content. If a recurring character has no real world content on them then they are relegated to the list at the bottom of the page. Per WP:PLOT, Wiki isn't just a plot summary, so an entire page based on his episode appearances doesn't meet the notability criteria. Because of the size of the Characters of Smallville page he was cut to make room for characters that do have real world content about them. His fictional history is covered fine on the season pages, as well as Clark's page.  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 22:16, 8 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Why is Jor-El in smallville referred to as a disembodied spirit? It's a computer program. Plain and simple.129.139.1.68 (talk) 14:35, 22 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

The image Image:Jorel yahoo.jpg is used in this article under a claim of fair use, but it does not have an adequate explanation for why it meets the requirements for such images when used here. In particular, for each page the image is used on, it must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for the use in this article.
  • That this article is linked to from the image description page.

Smallville: a good guy after all

[edit]

Jor-El's transition from being apparently evil, and commanding Clark to rule Earth, to being a sketchy but mostly good figure is referenced but not really explained. Clarification, anyone? Thanks! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 130.64.34.188 (talk) 18:02, 17 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Baby actor's name

[edit]

Why does the Superman the Movie pic state that the baby's name is unknown? Did anyone check IMDB? I knew the name from memory. Lee Quigley. [2] —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.26.173.203 (talk) 22:06, 4 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Jor-El and Lara page rename proposal

[edit]

I propose this page be renamed "Jor-El and Lara," in light of the importance of both Jor-El and Lara to Superman's backstory, as well as Lara's former page having been deleted (with her listed under "minor DC characters"). It'd also be consistent with the naming of the page for Jonathan and Martha Kent. Johnny Nevada (talk) 18:16, 5 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose
    • Lara was moved/merged because the article as it stood was strictly a plot dumping ground for a character that could be summed up in a few lines. No real world context or critique was ever present.
    • This article is worse since the character has been pushed farther into the spotlight than just "Superman's biological father". Even with that, this is plot dump after plot dump with no real world commentary or critique. To be honest, based on what is here, if it could be condensed as the other articles merged as Lara (comics) were, pruning the comics plot and leaving the bare bones on the IOM, it should be.
    • The article on the Kents isn't much better.

Jor-El in Smallville was the disembodied spirit of the actual man?

[edit]

Uh, what? Admittedly, Smallville was not always clear on such things (especially when it came to Jor-El and anything having to do with him or Krypton, where the plot would always get very hazy and confusing), but I never remember thinking for a moment the 'Jor-El' Clark deals with was a spirit in anything like the literal sense. I was pretty sure, whether it was ever explicitly stated or not (I'll look it up in a sec) that it was a kind of super-advanced 'living' artificial intelligence program written by his father to train him on earth.

Sure enough, the Smallville wiki agrees, saying it's an artificial intelligence program created using Jor-El's brainwaves (whatever that means) and sent to earth with Clark to help train him when he came of age. Considering how the thing actually behaves, and especially how it behaves compared to the Jor-El we later meet (and this isn't merely an inconsistency or rewriting - the 'real' Jor-El appears in-between appearances by the AI), it seems pretty obvious the thing is not the real Jor-El, or his spirit. It's a computer program. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.13.127.9 (talk) 11:36, 20 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
